The IFP calls on Ms Noxolo Kiviet, the Eastern Cape Premier, to take drastic action to improve the province’s health care system, as the Provincial MEC of Health seems to have failed to solve health crisis.
IFP spokesperson on Health, Mrs Hilda Msweli MP, said “Pregnant patients in Dora Nginza hospital are being treated on mattresses on the floor due to a chronic shortage of hospital beds. This is a violation of patients’ rights. The health MEC is failing to perform his allotted duties – he has failed to deal with the problem of the absence of ground level health care in rural areas. The department must urgently outline what action will be taken to address bed shortages in this facility and Livingstone Hospital”
The hospital had been placed under pressure for years by constant crisis management and having too many people seeking medical help.
“Our concern is also extended to the dire shortage of specialists in the Eastern Cape. This has resulted in more than a thousand people being on a waiting list for surgeries in the province. The department must urgently recruit the much need staff” concluded Msweli.
The IFP calls on the health MEC in the Eastern Cape to vacate his position because he has failed dismally to address health challenges since he took office. In addition, the national health department must build district hospitals in Dora Nginza as there are no such facilities.
