Eastern Cape provincial spokesperson Brigadier Marinda Mills was expected back in court on February 19 on charges of forgery, corruption and fraud, the Hawks said on Monday.
Spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said Mills was arrested on Friday at the provincial police head office in Zwelitsha near King William’s Town.
Mills, who heads the Eastern Cape Communications Division, appeared at the Zwelitsha Magistrate’s Court on Friday and was released on warning.
“We received information in February and we started investigating and got statements from relevant people.”
Malaudzi said the docket was taken to the senior public prosecutor and a decision was taken to arrest her on Friday.
“Apparently she signed a fraudulent claim for someone who was supposed to attend a meeting. The person then claimed for the trip and she signed it off, knowing that the person did not go to the meeting.”
Malaudzi said this should send a warning to all senior managers to take responsibility for their actions.
“Irrespective of how minute the issue may be, we need to set examples for junior staff. It is not personal, we just want those who are not on the straight and narrow to take responsibility for their actions,” he said.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci would not be drawn to say whether Mills had been placed on suspension or on who would act in her position.
“The suspension of any member of the SAPS is matter between employer and employee, and therefore cannot be discussed with the media,” said Soci.
