Eastern Cape must continue fight for a non-racial society

20 March 2015 By Alan Straton

Dear MyPE

Tomorrow we observe International Day for the elimination of racial discrimination. In 1979, the General Assembly decided that activities would be established to support those who are subjected to racial discrimination on March, 21 each year.

We have fought for over 20 years for transformation in this country yet racism still exists. We have had numerous instances of racial abuse on people of all races. A recent story surfaced describing an incident where a government official threatened to slap white motorists.

In 2012, it was reported that an Eastern Cape resort was being investigated for allegedly not allowing a black child to enter its premises. The child had visited the resort with his friend’s family. The friend’s mother was then informed that the 11 year old boy was not allowed on the property.

She was also informed that the only black individuals allowed on the premises were those who were working on the grounds and within the building.

Last year alone, over 500 racism related cases were reported to the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and it was reported that racism allegations make up approximately 80% of the 10 000 human rights complaints that are received by the institution.

The most concerning issue is that there are similar incidences that are never exposed. All Eastern Cape residents play a vital role in ensuring that non-racialism is not only a concept that is preached on a regular basis but one that is part of our core values.

The Democratic Alliance will not tolerate racial discrimination. We will continue to fight for the rights of all South Africans; we believe in an open opportunity society for all.

Regards
