The South African Library for the Blind (SALB) raised R5000.00 for a Grahamstown school for the mentally challenged and visually impaired through a book sale held during the National Arts Festival.
The book sale was part of the library’s Mandela Day contribution that took place from Wednesday, July 8 to Friday, July 10.
All proceeds from the book sale have been donated to the Kuyasa special school for disabilities in Grahamstown.
Kuyasa School was chosen as the beneficiary as it caters for the needs of those visually impaired, and in recent months experienced budget cuts, according to Neli Kaunda senior manager at the South Africa Library for the Blind
The cuts have affected the school’s ability to purchase sporting equipment and arts and culture material for the children, she says.
With the donation from the money raised from the book sale the school will be buying sporting equipment for the “Winter Games” that start in August. Pupils are excited to now be able to participate in the games, says Kaunda.
In addition 30 books were donated to the research centre for the teachers and learners to promote information and literacy at the school.
SALB is passionate about creating a better informed society by instilling the culture of learning, says Kaunda.
A variety of genres of books ranging from novels, short stories, poetry books, biographies and historical books make up the 570 of the 320 books that were sold at the book sale.
The remainder of the books will be donated to Samuel Ntsika Primary School, Nsika High School and various Old Age homes registered in our system says Kaunda.
Books that were sold were published in indigenous languages, English and Afrikaans.
The book sale is going to become an annual event for SALB.
