Nangoza Jebe Hall, formerly Centenary Hall, in New Brighton will be transformed into a 1950s-style Sophiatown dance hall as jazz aficionados soak up the smooth sounds of national afro-jazz act The Muffinz and local bands Ricochet and Take Note.
Oenophiles will be able to sample wines from over 400 different cultivars and 30 wine estates, while whiskey drinkers will have their choice of more than 10 classic brands.
According to TOPS senior retail operations manager Deon Schnetler, the aim of the festival was to create a sophisticated local entertainment platform for those who enjoyed the finer things in life.
Schnetler said the combination of whiskey, wine and jazz provided a harmonious feast for the senses and that South African consumers were opening themselves up to new taste experiences.
“Whiskey, for example, has traditionally been the preserve of countries like Ireland and Scotland but South Africa is rapidly becoming a player in this field.
“We therefore thought the festival would be a great platform to showcase home-grown brands and introduce the TOPS brand to an upwardly mobile market.”
He said it would certainly be a first for the metro, following the success of similar festivals in Soweto and Cape Town.
“It’s going to be a classy affair for people with discerning tastes. We encourage people to dress smartly with a nod to the retro-inspired Sophiatown theme.”
For the price of entry, the public will enjoy the three live musical acts, light snacks, and unlimited tastings at the various exhibitors’ stands, said Schnetler.
“Ticket sales have been brisk and we’re expecting it to spike next week as the festival approaches.”
As with any SPAR event in the Eastern Cape, he said there would be an element of giving back to the local community, and that a cheque would be handed over to a selected New Brighton charity.
Tickets cost R200 per person and are on sale at various TOPS outlets throughout Nelson Mandela Bay. Tickets will also be available at the venue and doors will open from 4pm.
