WESSA’s next Know your Bay (KYB) will take place Tuesday 27 August at Bayworld, where Dr Taryn Murray from the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB) in Grahamstown will present the fascinating work she is leading with the Acoustic Tracking Array Platform.
Since 2009, over 50 species of fish, from fishery species (dusky kob, spotted grunter or leervis) to large predatory sharks (great white, bull sharks or raggedtooths) have been tagged with an acoustic transmitter which emits a signal recorded by acoustic receivers deployed all along the South African coastline and beyond.
In her talk, Dr Murray will highlight some of the research conducted over the past decade and a half, revealing behaviours previously unknown and showing who actually knows (and uses) the bay!
The event is free and open to all. From 17:30 for 18:00 until 19:00.
International Coastal Clean up day is on the 21st of September 2024. It is locally coordinated by the Sustainable Seas Trust.
If you wish to either register your own clean-up in your area or check closer to the date where a clean-up will take place near you, you can contact Dr Stacey Webb directly (stacey@sst.org.za).
Of the clean ups recorded by Ocean Conservancy in 2023, over 4 000 tons of rubbish were removed on that day by 470 000 volunteers in 97 countries. See you then!
