Don’t Let Transnet Renew Their Emissions Licence

22 February 2011 By Alan Straton

Dear All,

As you may be aware Propnet (the Property management division of the Port Elizabeth Harbour) advertised for renewal of their atmospheric emissions licence for the manganese ore berth.

The licence was previously granted subject to conditions that they prevent, control, abate or mitigate any air pollution.

Propnet is only entitled to the renewal of such licence if it complied with such conditions, failing which they will not be regarded as a fit and proper person (entity). As you are aware, and the photograph below is evidence to that, they have not controlled the air pollution created by the manganese dust that often covers our city.

I own properties in Central and Humewood. My experience is that up and until the advertisement appeared in the Herald dated 25/01/2011, no measures were taken to cut pollution.

The act under which the application is made states:

  1. Air pollution carries a high social, economic and environmental cost that is seldom borne by the polluter.
  2. Everyone has the constitutional right to an environment that is not harmful to their health and well being

If your health, or property, is affected, please take this opportunity to object to such renewal by an entity that has shown little interest in your right and has no intention to pay for damages to your property.

Consider the following, does the dust:

  1. Affect your health
  2. Cause damage to your building, especially the paint, contents, curtains and furnishing
  3. Enjoyment of your own outdoor facilities
  4. Pollute your public amenities

Please lodge your objections before the 7th of March and more important, persuade your fellow property owners to do the same.

Coega Harbour is an industrial zone and the plant should be moved there. There is no reason that this plant should be upgraded to pollute the residential areas in our beautiful city to an even larger extent. See the pollution at Kings Beach and the dunes behind it.

I urge you to act now, and object before March 7, 2011.

Please also keep this alive, by writing to the press (and MyPE) and complaining about the unnecessary pollution to our environment.

All the very best,

Rodney Idris
