Dolphins and Whales keep eye on swimmers

7 October 2013 By Alan Straton

Port Elizabeth Olympic open water Swimmer Jessica Roux was in top form over the weekend with a great win in the Dischem 2km Ocean Swim at Hobie Beach on Sunday morning as part of the opening round of the City’s unique Ocean Racing Series™. Roux was part of over 350 participants taking part in one of five events during the start of Season 9 for the Series despite the cool damp conditions.

Overnight rain ensured near perfect and flat sea conditions for the swimmers with dolphins and whales also watching on as over 200 swimmers took to the waters of Algoa Bay in the Dis-Chem 1km and 2km Ocean Swim races. The Jones siblings appear to have picked up where they left off at the end of the last season with undefeated Season 7 and Season 8 2km champion, Wayne Jones, continuing his domination of the Series with another great win, this time ahead of this older brother Jason who was last season’s runner up in the 1km swim and on Sunday took to the 2km distance to place 2nd. Ronald Kroch claimed 3rd on the morning whilst Roux made a welcome return to the Series with a win in the Dis-chem 2km ladies Ocean Swim with Rebecca Newman and Lauren Munton taking the remaining podium positions.

Daniel Jones won the Dis-chem 1km swim from Joshua Bellairs and Robert Masterton with last season’s runner up, Kirsten Marriott, getting one up on the defending Series 1km ladies champion, Amy Mardon, with Amy Keech placing 3rd.

In the beach events it was Munro Ferreira who took the top spot in the 5km Beach Run. Ferreira, who at just 16 years old was the overall Series runner up last season, had a strong run to finish ahead of Luvuyo Stephen and Likhaya Rooi who are part of the Masakhane Future Stars program which is sponsored by Pagdens Attorneys and Willard Batteries. In the ladies 5km Beach Run it was 12 year old Megan Snyman who proved too strong on the morning to snatch the gold medal with Elizabeth Anderson in 2nd place and Michelle Lawson in 3rd whilst in the Swirlers Viennese Wafers 5km Beach Walk it was Juan Slabbert and Taryn Ferreira who took the honours on the morning. Colin Korkie and Johan Ferreira grabbed the remaining men’s medals while Maritza Craig and Milé Vermaak.

The ever popular Crickley Dairy Kids Beach Run attracts around 100 kids to the beach on Sunday mornings and saw Daniel Elfick and Kayley Pace winning the 6 years and under age group, Josh Pretorius and Chennin Upton (7-8 yrs), Jack Serfontein and Jamie Bulbring (9-10yrs) and Adam Grosse and Kayla Ferreira (12 years and under). All kids in this event receive a finishers medal from Sync Tooling & Project Solutions and their medal photograph from Zports and Sport Action Photography.

All participants got to enjoy a chilled BOS ice tea before the lucky draw prize giving with around 30 lucky draw prize hampers up for grabs each week include the feature lucky draw, R1,000 cash. Season 9 of the Ocean Racing Series™ consists of 11 race days and takes place on alternate Sunday mornings at Hobie Beach between 6th October and the end of March 2014.

The Series continues to support the Reach for a Dream Foundation and the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth Sunrise and on Sunday the Series contributed R1,500 towards the realisation of a dream for a young girl.
