Dolphin Challenge – JBay to PE – #Dolphin2016

8 November 2016 By Alan Straton

What began as the JBay2PE run between friends who ran from the Kabeljous River at Jeffreys Bay, swam the Gamtoos River, and legged it past Van Stadens River to finish at Maitlands River Mouth between 4 mates in 2013, 44 in 2014 and 6 as the PE2JBay in 2015 has evolved into a full blown renamed challenge – The Dolphin Challenge – which now also includes relay racing and allows Mountain Bikes to take part.

The 2016 Dolphin Challenge sets off from the Kabeljous River start point at 6:00 am on Sunday 11 December 2016.

Three time winner in 2013, 2014 and 2015, Jorg Brand will be expecting massive competition.

Runners, both individuals and relay teams, will line up at the Kabeljous River start in Jeffreys Bay and make their way along the beach to Maitlands River Mouth in Nelson Mandela Bay. This includes the popular swim through the Gamtoos River where assistance will be provided by EC Coastal Water Rescue and residents in a boat – runners who opt to make use of the boats to cross will receive a 10 minute time penalty.

Runners will then make their way up to Gamtoos Village for a check in and swap out for the relay teams. Refreshments will be available. The whole event is litter-free in the spirit of the #RunClean campaign sweeping athletic events.

After the Gamtoos check point, runners will be directed through the dunes to the beach where they will resume the beachfront run, through the Van Stadens Resort area (another relay swap out) and on to Maitlands River Mouth for the finish.

The Mountain Bike event will start and finish at the Maitlands River Mouth. The course is out and back along the beach to collect a token at the Gamtoos Village checkpoint shared with the runners.

The beaches on the route are pristine, and most people won’t get to experience their beauty unless it is through an organized event such as this.

T-shirts are being sold to raise funds for The Herald Christmas Cheer Fund & East Cape Coastal Water Rescue.
