Ditch Your Denim and Help a Child

2 July 2012 By Alan Straton

Are you saving your favourite old denims in your cupboard in the hope that you’ll lose weight and be able to squeeze back into them? Have you stashed your favourite bell bottom jeans away in the hope that they will become fashionable again? The SOS Children’s Villages in Port Elizabeth has a way that you can get rid of those denims and feel good about it at the same time.

SOS Children’s Village in Port Elizabeth launched the Denim Drive 2012 with a campaign called ‘Ditch ur Denim’. The campaign which started on 18 June will end on 18 July 2012 and is sponsored by the Greenacres Shopping Centre and the Port Elizabeth Pearls Ladies Circle No. 19.

The goal for 2012 is to collect 1000 old denim clothing items which can be dropped off at the collection point at Greenacres Shopping Centre until 18 July 2012.

“Ultimately the aim of the Denim Drive is to empower women from the income generating programmes that are run through the SOS Family Strengthening Programmes and the Social Centres across South Africa.  The denim items will be recycled into pretty and practical household and fashion items and then sold to generate an income for the women and their families,” says Werner van der Westhuizen, Village Director, SOS Children’s Villages Port Elizabeth.

The women involved in these income generation programmes are usually single parents, grandmothers or older siblings that are heading the households as a direct result of the impact of HIV/AIDS, other chronic illnesses and alcohol and physical abuse.

The Port Elizabeth Village is running this as a pilot programme and will take the lead in this exciting new initiative.

SOS Children’s Villages are appealing to you to clean out your cupboards and ditch your old denims to make a difference in the lives of those less privileged.

For more information contact Mandy Spies at the SOS Children’s Village Port Elizabeth.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
