Department of Home Affairs Port Elizabeth Telephone Number

12 July 2011 By Alan Straton

Department of Home Affairs

After receiving the hundredth call from some anonymous rude person looking for the telephone number for the Home Affairs Department in Port Elizabeth I decided to get off of my overworked fat butt and see if I could see just what was going on.

Now it has become quite a regular occurrence for us in MyPE land to receive such calls looking for telephone numbers of various businesses within our ambit. Most of them as a result of the evil combination of Google and Skype – for some strange unfathomable reason the MyPE landline number (which was removed from the site completely months ago)  is displayed as a contact number, via the Skype search add on, for many PE Businesses listed in the Directory. We have become rather adept at telling people to rather click on the Google link and then find the info that they require.

The last caller looking for the Home Affairs number didn’t want to wait around whilst I tried to solve her dilemma for her – we are actually quite friendly here in Port Elizabeth and don’t mind helping so, here is what I found out ANONYMOUS RUDE PERSON:

The correct number for the Port Elizabeth Home Affairs office is: 041 404 8300

BUT, don’t rush out and dial it as, at the time of writing it had been locally ‘out of order’ for a while now and I couldn’t get confirmation on when it will be in order again. (One suspects that that will happen as soon as Telkom receives a cheque!). In order to transact your business you will have to pop down in person to Nashua House, Govan Mbeki Avenue, North End.

If your business is a general type enquiry you could always phone the Uitenhage Home Affairs Office at 82 Constitution Street on 041 995 2800. I know for a fact that their switchboard is working (or was when I phoned).

If you find that the telephone number has changed since writing please contact us here with the new contact details OR add it to the comments section below.

Colour me impressed – I have been copied on the correspondence below by Annette Lovemore – ex Port Elizabeth Councillor and now DA Shadow Minister for Home Affairs:

PORT ELIZABETH OFFICE TELEPHONE NUMBER NOT OPERATIONAL

    Dear Mr Apleni

I have recently tried, on numerous occasions, to contact the Port Elizabeth office of Home Affairs, without success. It has now been publicly reported, via a local website (www.mype.co.za) that the number, 041 404 8300, is not operational. The other numbers for the office listed on your website (www.dha.gov.za) are also not functional.

    This is entirely unacceptable.

Kindly investigate this matter, and ensure that the requisite steps are taken to allow the public to contact the office telephonically.

    Sincerely

    ANNETTE LOVEMORE MP
    DA Shadow Minister: Home Affairs

That number is still not working, that is number 041 4048300. This is becoming ridiculous.

Amanda, I have asked Annette Lovemore to please look into this again – frankly this is embarrassing not only for PE but also for the country.

I am a marriage officer and P.E. office will not receive documents – i.e. will not register your marriages – I have to wait in the cue for every marriage I officiate over – Not likely. I did however get a cell no of a very kind gentleman at P.E. office – try this 078 272 0343

Amanda – just received a reply from Annette Lovemore, the DA Shadow Minister for Home Affairs, and she writes:

Yes – this is totally unacceptable. I received no response to my mail to the DG of Home Affairs. I have been in regular contact with Vanessa de Klerk at the Home Affairs office in PE. Telkom has checked the lines – the fault does not lie with them. Apparently, the problem has now been diagnosed by Dimension Data, and Vanessa (according to her update this morning) is waiting for them to provide a timeline for repairs. Individual office numbers are working, but the switchboard is not. I will check again on Monday morning.

I was shocked to find that the provincial office was not aware of the problem in PE.

I would suggest that anyone needing to get hold of Home Affairs use either 041 484-1773 or 041 487-1957. The manager of the office is Mrs Zoto – her cell number is 082 366 3904. (I have tried this cell number a few times, but it hasn’t been answered.)

The fact that this article is on the first page of Google when you look for the Department of Home Affairs telephone number is a sad ‘advert’ for service delivery – I cannot understand why it takes so long to FIX such a simple problem!

    Hi All

It is Monday 15/08/2011 and all numbers for the Deparment of Home Affairs in PE are still not working.  I have tried all three numbers listed on the site and the numbers listed on here.  No Luck.

Did you try these numbers for the Department of Home Affairs: 041 484 1773 or 041 487 1957.
The manager of the office is Mrs
      Zoto – her cell number is 082 366 3904.

I too had trouble contacting Port Elizabeth Home Affairs office and located the following no: 041 487 1957.

I called it this morning and was advised that there was still a problem with the 041 404 8300 number and any queries could be directed to the 041 487 1957 number.

    Hope this assists others.

Ed: Thanks Jillian – most kind of you to share.

I was trying to contact Dep Of Home Affairs in PE. Being a fellow Gov. employee, it embarrass me that the service provided from our Home affairs offices is so bad. I would like to suggest that the Management teams for each area, if any, give training to all staff working for these offices. I am embarrased.

26 February – an emailed comment that MyPE received today:

Anyone trying to phone Home Affairs PE?

    Forget it………………!

You won’t get hold of them by phoning them because, as I have been informed, they simply haven’t paid their phone bill.

    HOW ABSURD!!!!!! HOW PATHETIC!!!!!!!

What has this country come to since the introduction in 1994 of so-called democracy?

    This is NOT a democracy. It’s a ‘Free-for-all’…………….

..where incompetence, laziness and fraudulent behavior is rewarded with salary increases and promotions.

I also want to try and remain positive in this ‘New South Africa’ but I’m finding it increasingly difficult.

    An emailed comment:

I have tried now for the last three weeks to contact Home Affairs on 041 4048300

The phone either just rings non stop or stays engaged.

I want to find out if my son can apply for his ID Card on a Saturday and what is required.

I have never experienced such frustration before with a government department.

I phoned Home affairs Cleary Park and was answered but took a while
Had my smart card and passport renewal done there and got good service being over 60
Desperately sorry for all the staff as each one of them are doing two jobs at once so it is a bit hectic there. Terribly under staffed

Thanks for the info Denise – we still get calls from frustrated people being pushed from pillar to post unfortunately – one would think that after 7 years the department would have got their act together. Must be hell on the staff to hear the same moans hour after hour.
