Denim and Diamonds High Tea Fundraiser

You are invited to celebrate Human Rights Day on 21 March 2015 and support the SOS Children’s Village Port Elizabeth at their Denim and Diamonds High Tea Fundraising event.

The event is taking place at the stunning Running Waters venue in Kragga Kama. Musical entertainment will be provided by Cello Charm and the Stone Sisters. Hostesses will sell tickets and provide delectable delights to nibble on and Honey Fashion Accessories, Manna Delights and Bioceram will be donating prizes for lucky draws. Also on sale on the day will be Handbags and Teddy bears, made from recycled denims.

The event is in aid of growing the “Denim Drive” denim recycling income generating project. Funds raised will help towards the sustainability of the project and purchasing more sewing machines, haberdashery and equipment.

Guest speaker, Sonja Kruse, also known as ‘The uBuntu Girl’ is blessed with a well-developed sense of adventure and enormous faith in humanity. In 2009 she embarked on a year long solo trip around South Africa on foot and by thumb. She set out with a 33lt backpack, a camera and a R100 with an open heart and an open mind. She hitch hiked and walked for 351 days, experiencing the generosity of 150 families, from 16 cultures, throughout 114 towns. She did this without a back up team, tent or bank cards and without pre-planning the route. She wanted to collect the goodwill stories that are often omitted from our newspaper headlines. She is the author of ‘The uBuntu Girl’ – a book about this epic journey. Her wish is that it will help us build social bridges and equip the next generation with the tools to write the stories we want for our future.

“The SOS Children’s Village Port Elizabeth Denim Drive is in its 4th year this year, the aim is to empower unemployed parents/care-givers with skills to grow their own social enterprises, to help break the cycle of poverty and dependence on social grants. Unwanted denims donated by members of the public are recycled into pretty and practical household and fashion items and then sold to generate an income for the programme participants and their families,” says Mandy Spies, Fundraiser, SOS Children’s Villages Port Elizabeth.
