NMB Executive Mayor Cllr. Danny Jordaan addressed a special Council Meeting today, Thursday 10th June 2015, stating that he sensed a definite urgency and common purpose in the political leadership of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, to fulfill their duty in service of all the people of the Nelson Mandela Bay. Mayor Jordaan brought to the Council’s attention that the NMB youth will be attempting to break a world record on Saturday 13th June at the Dan Qeqe Stadium by forming the world’s longest chain of people clapping hands, as part of the ‘City of Champions’ Initiative.
The City of Champions™ is a Mandela Legacy project in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Bay. Through the City of Champions™ initiative, Nelson Mandela Bay is striving to be the first city in the world to hold the most World Records simultaneously.
Participants will also be setting a new World Record for the most people doing the Nae Nae Dance in respect to ‘Say NO TO Xenophobia’. The Nae Nae is an easily modifiable celebratory dance invented by the Atlanta quintet ‘We are Toonz’. Eastern province Athletics and the Motherwell Athletics Club are conducting 5km and 10km races at the stadium before the World Record attempts.
The City intends to hold 27 World Record Events, from single to hundreds of participants in the Nelson Mandela Bay over the next three years. As this project forms part of the Mandela Legacy Projects, the 27 World Records envisioned are in line with the 27 years that Nelson Mandela spent as Champion of Unity, Freedom, and Diversity.
Mayor Jordaan also affirmed that, “Our situation in this metro demands that we unequivocally raise our political, social, economic and moral consciousness on a path of unceasing activism.”
Mayor. Jordaan said he “saw signs of positive change and a hopeful future gleam through many spheres of our communal and institutional horizon”, but he was clear that the challenges are enormous and intrinsic.
“The youth particularly has been marginalized socially, economically and educationally and many experience this as rejection by the dominant culture in society. There is a feeling that their personal suffering is ignored on a practical level. The youth have historically been marginalized and excluded from key resources of power and authority in society. This leaves them frustrated and disempowered. As a united community, we are cognizant that we comprise of people who come from diverse backgrounds, with values and cultures that over the years have enriched the fabric of society into a resplendent tapestry of diversity. Thus, among these values are non-racialism, non-sexism and non-ageism some of the primary realities of our past, our present and our future.”
The NMBM in partnership with the City of Champions will compete to complete records jointly with citizens and businesses through inclusive, innovative and focused efforts. The mission to demonstrate true ‘Madiba Magic’ where all citizens can partake without favour or prejudice.
