Dam Levels NOT Affected by Rain

8 February 2011 By Alan Straton

Despite some pretty high rainfall figures the dam levels of the major dams supplying Nelson Mandela Bay continue their slide towards the critical 30% capacity level.

The Loerie Dam, for example, had 65mm of rain in the catchment area and despite the Baviaans River overflowing it’s banks the capacity still dropped from 50.4% on 31 January to 47.6% on 7 February.

The Churchill and Groendal dams were the only two to experience a very slight increase.

The levels of the Major Storage Dams supplying the Metro as at 31 January 2011 – Volume of water – and Rainfall (4 to 6 February 2011):

  • Kouga: 37,3% – 47 918 Ml – (6,6 mm)
  • Churchill: 36,4% – 12 933 Ml – (49,0 mm)
  • Impofu: 24,6% – 24 134 Ml – (53,6 mm)
  • Loerie: 47,6% – 1 866 Ml – (65,0 mm)
  • Groendal: 66,9% – 7 791 Ml – (37,0 mm)
  • Average All: 34,12%  of total combined capacity. (94 642 divided by 277 401)

Residents are requested to do their utmost to save water.

The effect of the good rain will only become apparent in a few days time.

Kareedouw had a total of 120 mm over the weekend. This is very good news !

Oh come on that’s just not possible. Huge amounts of rain and no effect? Pull the other one man.

Remember that we had a series of hot windy days before (my green pool experiment really suffered) and the inflows do take time.

It is because those idiots who live in Summerstrand still fill their pools up and have their gardens landscaped – at the height of summer – get real. Can people be that stupid in the middle of a drought? Does having a little bit of cash qualify you for stupid? Hope not – i would have to be an idiot as well. Perhaps they just want to keep up with the Joneses and show how doff they really are.
