Dam Levels at 65.1% Today

10 June 2011 By Alan Straton

The average levels of the major supply dams to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality have increased significantly since the start of the heavy rain a few days ago. The level of the Impofu dam is still a cause for concern and we hope that the good inflow into this dam will translate into a much higher level.

The capacities of the major storage dams  supplying  Nelson Mandela Bay, as measured this morning 10 June:

  • Kouga: 83,8% – 107 722 Ml
  • Churchill: 56,1% – 19 929 Ml
  • Impofu: 38,2% – 37 458 Ml
  • Loerie: 100% – 3 919 Ml
  • Groendal: 100% – 11 645 Ml
  • Average all: 65,1%  of total combined capacity – 180 674 Ml.

The best news that I have heard all day – AWESOME! What was the Impofu Dam’s previous name or was it always Impofu?

Great news to hear that the average dam levels are already at 65%. One would expect these levels to still rise further with run-off over the next few days. Now it is time for the municipality to lift restrictions and do away with extra charges for water consumption over 15 k/litres.

Not so sure about removing the water restrictions just yet. – think that it is about time that property owners are incentivised to have water tanks, just like Eskom have done with Solar Geysers.
We waste far too much water. We should be conserving water in the good times and the bad.

why are the dams so far from Port Elizabeth, i live in Houston, Texas, and we are in a drought, but we got water stored for the next 2 years before we hit the way Port Elizabeth was hit.  Its time for Port Elizabeth to build dams nearer to  the city, to catch twice the amount of water.
