COVID-19 Lockdowns – Could we be back to ‘Normal’ by September 2020

26 May 2020 By Alan Straton

Since 27 March 2020 South Africa’s Lockdown Levels have been eased every month

If that continues to happen we could be at Level 1 by August and a resumption of normal activities by September. Of course we would also have to see similar levels of Lockdown easing from other countries to be able to get cross border industries like tourism back on track.

SA Lockdown Level Timeline:

  1. 27 March 2020 – Lockdwn Level 5
  2. 1 May 2020 – Lockdown Level 4
  3. 1 June 2020 – Lockdown Level 3

Lest we forget – the easing of the Lockdown Levels is ‘apparently’ subject to a myriad of factors that even a higher grade education will find confusing.

The purpose of the lockdown is to give the health care providers time to prepare for a predicted/expected/maybe massive rise in infections and people needing care when we are finally allowed to resume normal activities.

Most countries have failed with their preparations and are lagging far behind predicted infection rates.

In South African politics there is a growing realisation that the Zuma faction still in government is very strong. On the other side of the coin we have Ramaphosa as the “Great White Hope” who needs to score big time and get rid of the Lockdown in time to campaign hard ahead of the elections next year.

BUT, we need to look long and hard at the Zuma vs Ramaphosa ‘fight’ as whoever wins doesn’t really matter to the ANC.

What the ANC have done here is quite a brilliant strategy – they have created two apparent choices in the mind of the population and, no matter who wins, the ANC will win. I am tempted to say that such a strategy is UNpatriotic.
