Could this be the measure of who you vote for?

16 February 2016 By Alan Straton

One of the measures on the People’s Assembly web site is a record of the number of committee meetings held in parliament with a special emphasis on who attended from which party.

Granted – some MP’s from smaller parties may have clashes as they have to attend to many different portfolios, whilst some from the larger parties have a diminished work load.

At the end of the day it all comes down to effective management by the smaller parties who should be taking a more focused ‘rifle’ rather than a ‘shot gun’ approach to their contribution to democracy.

2016 committee meeting attendance records for the members of parliament:

  1. ANC – the 124 members had to attend 293 meetings and only managed to attend 70%
  2. DA – the 59 members had to attend 118 meetings and only managed to attend 53%
  3. FF+ – the 3 members had to attend 12 meetings and only managed to attend 42%
  4. APC – the 1 member had to attend 3 meetings and only managed to attend 33%
  5. UDM – the 3 members had to attend 20 meetings and only managed to attend 30%
  6. EFF – the 22 members had to attend 59 meetings and only managed to attend 29%
  7. AIC – the three members had to attend 13 meetings and only managed to attend 23%
  8. PAC – the 1 member had to attend 5 meetings and only managed to attend 20%
  9. IFP – the 10 members had to attend 47 meetings and only managed to attend 15%
  10. COPE – the 3 members had to attend 22 meetings and only managed to attend 9%
  11. NFP – the 5 members had to attend 24 meetings and only managed to attend 8%
  12. ACDP – the one member missed 3 meetings for a score of 0%
  13. AGANG SA – the two members missed 9 meetings for a score of 0%

Based on the numbers above it looks like the EFF are punching far below their weight with the FF+ and UDM punching far above their weight.

With a 0% score AGANG SA could be out doing OtherGang stuff.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
