With Brent Janse van Rensburg stepping down as Kings head coach, Rassie Erasmus may be persuaded to take over the reins for next year’s Super Rugby competition.
Janse van Rensburg on Wednesday quit as head coach of the embattled franchise amid the financial crisis currently being experienced by the union.
The Kings’ woes prompted the South African Rugby Union (SARU) to step in and assist the franchise as they prepare for their re-entry into Super Rugby next year.
SARU promptly employed its “mobi-unit” of coaches to help the Kings.
Erasmus, SARU’s Director of Rugby, heads this unit which also consists of defence expert Jacques Nienaber, kicking coach Louis Koen, scrum coaches Pieter de Villiers and Balie Swart as well as breakdown specialist Richie Gray and performance analyst Chean Roux.
With Janse van Rensburg gone, the possibility of Erasmus coaching the Kings for the entire Super Rugby season is now a distinct possibility.
Erasmus previously coached the Cheetahs and Stormers in Super Rugby.
Despite Janse van Rensburg’s move, EP officials remain confident that the Kings management team will soon be put in place to continue their preparations for Super Rugby.
“We are in regular discussion with the SA Rugby Union who have taken over the organisation of the franchise on the way forward and there is much work being done behind the scenes to ensure the Southern Kings squad is properly prepared for its return to Super Rugby in February,” EP Rugby president Cheeky Watson said via a press statement on Wednesday.
