Eskom has not implemented load shedding over the past 16 successive days, it said on Tuesday.

With the power system currently being stable, there is a low risk of load shedding today enabling Eskom to carry out its planned maintenance.

Monday’s evening peak demand for electricity (30 722MW) was met by available capacity (32 171MW).

“Eskom’s aim is to meet the country’s electricity needs and maintain its power generating units with minimal or no load shedding. However, should we experience additional generating unit failure, the possibility of load shedding may intensify,” said Eskom.

The power utility has appealed to all its customers to continue to reduce their electricity usage throughout the day but to be aware of the need to save more during the peak periods from 6am to 10am and 5pm to 9pm.

Commercial customers, particularly shopping centres and office blocks, can also make a big difference by switching off non-essential lights and not leaving office equipment such as photocopiers and computers in standby mode after hours. – SAnews.gov.za
