I recently uploaded a video which, in 2008, was a paid for report by a local company to be aired on a large monthly subscription television sport channel.
“So bloody what!” I hear you say.
Well this same subscription channel issued a take down request for a different video that I had uploaded a while ago for footage that I had taken myself, edited myself and narrated myself.
My sin? Said footage just happened to have been taken during the time that said subscription channel had the rights to ‘live broadcast’ a rugby game and, apparently their contract with the sporting body gave them exclusive rights to any video during the game.
What I find intriguing is that the video I uploaded to YouTube recently was from 2008 as a paid for segment by a sponsor to be aired on this sport subscription TV channel AND after uploading the paid for content YouTube sent a copyright claim for SIX of the tunes in the video – see example below:
A copyright owner using Content ID claimed some material in your video.
This is just a heads up
Don’t worry. You’re not in trouble and your account standing is not affected by this.
There are either ads running on your video, with the revenue going to the copyright owner, or the copyright owner is receiving stats about your video’s views.
Which leads me to wonder if said sport subscription channel used the copyright material with permission and used some of the money that they were paid to flight the video to reimburse the copyright holders.
I suppose we would never know despite my misgivings that the copyright holders were unable to use YouTubes clever algorithm and, as a result were not paid by the sport channel in question.
