Condolences on the passing of Saki Manakaza

SA Rugby President Mr Oregan Hoskins on Monday paid tribute to Saki Manakaza, Deputy President of the Border Rugby Union, who passed away over the weekend at the age of 50.

Manakaza, who was involved in rugby in Border since 2004, passed away in an East London hospital on Friday following a long illness.

“Saki played a massive role in rugby in Border and his untimely death has robbed the union of a true rugby man,” said Mr Hoskins.

“I was privileged to know Saki well and he was an unselfish servant of rugby in the Eastern Cape, who never did anything for own gain and always looked at what is best for Border, often during trying circumstances.

“I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the Manakaza family for their loss. He will forever be remembered as someone who gave a lot of time and energy to the sport we all love so dearly. Border rugby will be poorer because of his sad passing.”

Saki Manakaza was born on 2 December 1965 in Ndakana village at Ngqamakwe in the Transkei. His career in provincial rugby administration started in 2004, when he was elected Vice-President of the BRU under Monwabisi Yako, after which he also served under Cliff Pringle.

Manakaza took a sabbatical from rugby administration to focus on business commitments, but returned in 2013 when he was elected as Deputy President of the BRU, a position he filled with distinction until his death.

He is survived by his wife Khanyisa and three children.
