Community radio station KingfisherFM has appealed to the community to avoid giving pets as gifts this Christmas and they’ve done so by hosting a rather unique guest live on air. Tally, an Australian Sheepdog, was interviewed by Ethan Black on the lunch time show to get a ‘first hand’ voice on the subject.
Tally answered questions with barks and howls, which were translated into human language concepts by the interviewer as the discussion went on.
Her message was that people should not give animals as gifts at Christmas, but rather adopt them at an appropriate time with a lifelong commitment to their care. According to Animal Welfare adoptions specialist Catherine Schmelzer shelters tend to get flooded with unwanted pets after each festive season, due to lack of long range planning by people giving pets as gifts.
Tally is herself a rescue after being given away by her original owners after only a year. As such she was judged to be the perfect ‘spokesperson’ on this subject.
An SABC News crew were on hand to film the interview which is to be aired on SABC News Channel 404 on DSTV on Wednesday 10th December.
