City faces water restrictions as Zuma breaks election promises

The Democratic Alliance was extremely disappointed to learn during a sitting of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee today that the money promised by President Jacob Zuma to complete the Nooitgedacht Low-Level Water Scheme will not be coming. Sadly the much needed funding promised has turned out to be little more than a vote buying ploy by the President.

Zuma made the funding commitment during one of his campaign visits to Nelson Mandela Bay last year. In committee today in answers to questions put during a discussion on the city’s water loss reduction strategy, it was spelled out that National Treasury had in fact laughed off the request, saying that the metro should make use of internal resources.

As a result of this backtracking on the part of the executive, the city is left in the precarious position of facing water restrictions in the near future.

Pay for it yourself is not the answer that the people of this city expect nor deserve. This city cannot trade on broken promises. The Democratic Alliance intends to hold the president to his word and will be raising the matter in parliament for a response, carrying forward a simple message – Pay us the money Mr President !
