Child missing off Smelly creek

At 15h18, Friday, 01 January, NSRI Port Elizabeth duty crew dispatched 2 sea rescue craft to join Coastal water Rescue, the Nelson Mandela Bay Beach Managers authorities and Blue Water Bay searching for a 14 year ld local male missing in the surf at Smelly Creek, near to Deal Party.

It appears that a National Ports Authority security member, Roland Luitjies, while on a routine patrol, witnessed the child in difficulty and went into the water to rescue the child but lost his grip on the child in waves.

An extensive search, including 2 sea rescue craft, a lifeguard boat, Coastal Water Rescue boat, a Police helicopter, Nelson Mandela Bay Fire and Rescue Services, EC Government Health EMS, the SA Police Services and a Police dive unit, no sign of the missing teenager has been found.

Police divers will continue an ongoing search.

Police have opened an investigation and are attending to the family of the missing child.
