Child locked in car

This morning shortly after 09h00 the SAPS were notified by members of the public, concerned for the welfare of a small child left in a vehicle at a shopping complex in Walmer.

When the SAPS arrived at 6th Avenue Shopping Centre, they were shown a red VW Golf with a young child in the vehicle. The police were then informed that the young child had been alone in the vehicle for more than 45 minutes.

Shortly afterwards, the female driver of the car arrived and the police confronted her.

Members of the public were angered even further when they were informed that the SAPS were not going to open a case against the mother of the child.

The vehicle was last seen returning to Summerstrand.

    Hello Alan,

    I cannot understand why those who were unhappy about the decision of the police did not approach the station commander at the Walmer police station nearby or lay a charge themselves, both options which are open to them.

    They couldalso report the incident to the Social Welfare authorities which may bethe more effective method in this case. Hopefully someone took the vehicles’s registration number or even perhaps a photo of the incident and the vehicle.

    The police officers in attendance would have had to document this incident somehow at the Walmer police station if they followed their correct procedures.

    We as members of the public need to force the police to be much more accountable than we do, instead of just whining about such matters anf getting nowhere.
