In a second break-in on the same day, a store in Bellmont Terrace was burgled when suspects entered the premises via the main entrance and took a laptop.

Summerstrand burglaries persist:

  • A property in Arkhon Street was burgled on Wednesday, 20 April 2011. Access was gained through the kitchen window and the items stolen include a cashbox containing R500.00, a hard-drive, DVDs and a computer charger.
  • On Saturday, 23 April 2011 a property in Jenvey Road was burgled when suspects gained access via the guest room, stealing two laptops, a blackberry, takkies and a camera.
  • A house in Bognor Street was burgled on Tuesday, 26 April 2011 when suspects broke the front glass siding door to gain entry to the property while the resident was at home. The resident contacted her husband when she heard the alarm and stayed in the bedroom while waiting for armed response assistance. ADT and the Humewood SAPS responded within minutes of the alarm activation but the suspects had already left the premises taking with them the flat screen plasma television set. No one was harmed during the incident.

ADT Officer’s vigilance leads to apprehension of thieves in Valley Edge:

  • Armed Response Officer Vuyo Nogaya was patrolling Northcliff Road on Tuesday, 3 May 2011 when he noticed two suspicious males walking along the street carrying electronic equipment. Although one suspect ran away as he approached them, he managed to apprehend the other man on the corner of St Johns and Church Road. The suspect was handed over to the SAPS and it was later confirmed that the suspects had broken into a house in Linkside.

New Brighton hit by rising number of robberies:

  • Over the past two weeks, New Brighton has been hit by a number of armed robberies and burglaries and residents are encouraged to remain alert for any suspicious activity in and around the area. The first incident took place on Wednesday, 27 April 2011 at a store in Dubula Street. While staff were offloading stock from a truck, an armed man walked to the driver’s side and broke the window, triggering a shot from his firearm. The truck driver drove away and the suspect proceeded into the store where he held the cashier up at gunpoint. He stole R 1200.00 in cash, cigarettes and airtime valued at R600.00.
  • The second incident occurred in 135th Avenue on Thursday, 28 April 2011 when a burglar entered a store through the roof and stole R2500.00 in cash, cigarettes and two cell phones.
  • On Saturday, 30 April 2011, suspects broke into the science laboratory of a high school in Madala Street by jumping over the back wall and cutting the burglar bars to gain entry. No items were reported missing.
