Celebrating Women of Substance

Taking inspiration from a recently held workshop, “Conversations with Women”, where high profile business women sat together and discussed topics relevant to them and South Africa, two local women have teamed with ELLE magazine to engage “Women of Substance” in conversation.

Michelle Brown and Bridgette Gasa have secured 10 significant business women to each act as “Hosts” to a group of between 10 and 20 other women. These groups will be discussing issues of relevance to business women and sharing their thoughts with all attendees after their sessions.

Port Elizabeth women represented on the Women of Substance panel are; Advocate Wabo Msizi, Bongi Siwisa (Chair of Emfuleni Resorts), Dorothea Moors (Member of the Board of Coca Cola Sabco, Gutsche Family Investment), Nomkhita Mona (CEO of UDDI and the Vice President of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber), Dorelle Sapere (MBDA), Barbara Robertson (The Herald Editor), Dr Blanche Pretorius (NMMU).

I was most pleased to see that one of the panel members, Nomkhita Mona, who is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Uitenhage Despatch Development Initiative (UDDI) also serves on the boards of two foundations close to my heart; Wilderness Foundation (SA), where she is a trustee and the Oliver Foundation.

As Chief Executive Officer of the UDDI over the past three years, Mona and her team, have successfully conceived and implemented a number of sustainable economic development initiatives in the Uitenhage and Despatch area.

Nomkhita holds an MBA from Rhodes University. She also holds a Masters Degree in Labour Relations & Human Resources along with an Honours degree in Industrial Relations and a BA degree (Psychology & Sociology) – both from the University of Port Elizabeth.

Nomkhita Mona was the first black woman to be appointed to the board of Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Holdings in South Africa and aims to set the industry benchmark in the areas of environmental sustainability, corporate governance, Black Economic Empowerment and corporate social investment. She is the current Deputy President of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber. Mona also serves on the board of the Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism Board.

Nomkhita is married, with 3 children (2 daughters and a son).
