Premature payment of Baviaans strikers backfires horribly

6 April 2016 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The unilateral undertaking by the municipal manager and senior officials of the Department of Cooperative Governance (Cogta) to pay striking workers in the Baviaans Municipality without a mandate from the council, has backfired. Today, the strike by the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) was resumed, but municipal manager  Jama Vumazonke is conveniently on two week’s leave and Cogta is no-where to be seen. The province cannot simply march in, march out and dump the problem on the … [Read more...] about Premature payment of Baviaans strikers backfires horribly

Jacob Zuma

Dear MyPE The Democratic Alliance (DA) has today laid criminal charges against members of the Gupta family in terms of Section 4 of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act, 2004 (Act No. 12 of 2004), following revelations this week that members of the ANC-aligned Gupta family had offered cabinet positions to at least two ANC members in exchange for executive decisions favourable and beneficial to Guptas' narrow business interests. Both current Deputy Minister of Finance, … [Read more...] about Criminal charges laid against Guptas

3 000 potholes remain unrepaired in Sunday’s River Valley

7 March 2016 By Port Elizabethan

Vicky Knoetze

Dear MyPE There are over 3 000 potholes in the Sunday's River Valley Municipality (SRVM), but it remains unlikely that they will be repaired soon. It is inconceivable that a region with the second largest contribution to the economy of the Eastern Cape is constrained by collapsing infrastructure.  This has a direct negative effect on the economy of SRVM in particular and the Eastern Cape in general. In response to legislature questions I submitted to the MEC of Cooperative Governance … [Read more...] about 3 000 potholes remain unrepaired in Sunday’s River Valley

Dumping of rubbish at Buffalo City Coastal Municipal Offices

22 February 2016 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The Democratic Alliance in Buffalo City notes the civic action by residents of Gonubie, who have piled two weeks of uncollected refuse outside the doors of the municipal offices in the seaside suburb. This is the culmination of months of unfulfilled promises on the part of the municipality, and, expresses the extreme disgust of all residents of Buffalo City at the filthy state of our metro. It has been reported that the next step will be to dump refuse at City Hall, and while … [Read more...] about Dumping of rubbish at Buffalo City Coastal Municipal Offices

Kouga & Koukamma road maintenance programmes collapsing

27 January 2016 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE There seems to be a complete financial collapse for the department of roads and public works' road maintenance budget for the 2016 financial year in the Kouga and Koukamma area, which has a devastating influence on the economic drivers of these two municipalities. This will result in job losses if not rectified immediately. At present, an amount of around R75 million has been diverted from the road maintenance budget for the Sarah Baartman District area (Kouga, Koukamma, … [Read more...] about Kouga & Koukamma road maintenance programmes collapsing

High visibility and tough law enforcement key to curb high road death toll

13 January 2016 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE High visibility and tough law enforcement all year-round, not just seasonal plans, can curb the high road death toll in the Eastern Cape.  Bad practices developed by drivers over the year due to lack of law enforcement become a habit.  The province recorded the highest number of road fatalities in the country during the festive season, an increase of 22 %, from 227 in 2014/15 to 278 in 2015/16. On behalf of the DA, I want to express my sincere condolences to the families who have … [Read more...] about High visibility and tough law enforcement key to curb high road death toll

‘Economic misery’ predicted for 2016

15 December 2015 By Alan Straton

John Loos

The year-on-year rate of change in the SARB Leading Business Cycle Indicator remained firmly negative, but was slightly less negative in October compared to September, while the more volatile month-on-month rate of change was actually positive. Year-on-year, the SARB Leading Indicator declined by -4.8% in the month of October. This is a slightly less extreme decline than the revised -5.2% year-on-year decline for September, but nevertheless remains dismal. This rate of decline continues to … [Read more...] about ‘Economic misery’ predicted for 2016
