Unlocking Growth: How Coega’s Security Strategy Protects Your Investment

23 July 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

Mr. Neville Andrew, Security Manager for the Coega Development Corporation, delivering a presentation to the South African National Defence College Study Tour delegation on 18 July 2024.

In an insightful opinion piece, Mr. Neville Andrew, Security Manager at the Coega Development Corporation (Coega), emphasises a critical issue facing South Africa: the pervasive threat of crime. Mr. Andrew writes that this issue not only inflicts personal harm on citizens but also poses a significant risk to the country’s economic stability. Crime leads to property loss, infrastructure damage, and increased security costs for both businesses and households, generating an atmosphere of uncertainty that impedes economic progress and diverts resources.

The Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ) embodies progress in South Africa, playing a pivotal role in attracting investments and fostering economic prosperity. However, security stands out as a fundamental pillar underpinning its success.

In fact, Coega has adopted a comprehensive strategy that amalgamates traditional security measures with state-of-the-art technology. At the heart of this approach lies the 24/7 Command and Control Centre (C3), staffed by four professionals and overseeing the SEZ through a network of over 500 strategically positioned cameras. Powered by artificial intelligence, the C3 employs biometric technology to mitigate risks in non-SEZ areas, particularly those intersected by national and provincial roads, presenting unique security challenges.

Recognising these obstacles is crucial to formulating effective solutions. The commendable efforts of Coega’s security team involve leveraging data analytics to pinpoint crime hotspots and anticipate potential issues. Collaboration with academic institutions offers the promise of enhancing this capability, paving the way for datadriven strategies in resource allocation and patrol planning.

The future of security lies in embracing innovation. Integrating AI into existing security systems can revolutionise crime prevention. AI-powered video analytics can detect suspicious activity in real-time, triggering alerts and enabling rapid response.

Additionally, implementing drone technology allows for a wider surveillance range and faster response times to incidents.

Combining physical security measures like access control systems and perimeter fencing with advanced technological solutions creates a robust defense.

The road to enhanced security also requires a commitment from all stakeholders. The adage “united we stand, divided we fall” rings true in the context of Coega’s security landscape. Collaboration between the SEZ, law enforcement agencies, private security firms, and the surrounding community is essential. Sharing information, coordinating efforts, and fostering trust are key to proactively addressing threats.

In conclusion, Coega’s security environment cannot be viewed in isolation. By continuing to foster partnerships, understand challenges, harness the power of technology, and prioritise economic security, the SEZ can maintain a secure environment for investors, businesses, and communities alike. This collaborative approach paves the way for a more prosperous and secure future for Coega and South Africa as a whole.

Coega and Partners Championed Change for Mandela Day at Vulumzi Senior Secondary School

21 July 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

On Thursday, 18 July 2024, in the spirit of Nelson Mandela International Day 2024, the Coega Development Corporation (Coega) joined Columba Leadership, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM), the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE), and the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR) to implement a series of environmental initiatives at Vulumzi Senior Secondary School in Motherwell, Gqeberha.

Endorsing the initiatives, the NMBM MMC for Public Health, Mr. Thsonono Buyeye, shared that environmental stewardship is central to the health of people and their communities: “As a Metro, we welcome these collaborative initiatives as we believe they are more fruitful than when stakeholders work in silos. We appreciate the efforts, and we always support such initiatives with all the resources we have including human resources.

In fact, just last month, we actively participated in environmental initiatives aligned with World Environment Month, responding to the devastating floods that affected our city. The impact of those floods is still evident, and the reality of climate change demands that we collectively reassess our synergy with the environment and work together towards a more sustainable future.”

Driven by a shared passion for environmental stewardship and supported by Coega’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) Programme, Coega employees and partners dedicated their time and energy to make a lasting difference for Vulumzi Senior Secondary School and the surrounding community.

Ms. Telly Chauke, Coega’s Chief Sustainability Officer, said: The Coega Development Corporation is very intentional in its approach to stakeholder engagement and forming sustainable partnerships; carefully selecting partners who share our common objectives and to make an impact as a leading catalyst for the championing of socio-economic development. We prioritise collaborations that align with our goals, particularly in the education sector, where we focus on long-term relationships with schools to influence the
choices of young people in their academic and professional pursuits. By sharing knowledge and resources, we empower communities to achieve sustainable growth.

Our partnership with Columba, for instance, concentrates on leadership development and sustainability, which are core priorities for us. By measuring the impact of our relationships, we aim to create a positive influence on our children and the community where we have an operational footprint in the region. To achieve this, we engage in consultations with various stakeholders to ensure a collective approach to creating a deep and lasting impact.

The establishment of a sustainable food garden, the planting of indigenous and fruits trees, a waste management system, and comprehensive community clean-up outside of the school premises were the culmination of tireless efforts by all stakeholders involved. These impactful initiatives directly support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2 (Zero Hunger), 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).

DRDAR representative, Bongani Gocina shared that after a week of dedicated preparation prior to Mandela Day, the collaboration between Coega, Columba, NMBM, DFFE, and DRDAR yielded impressive results.

“This initiative aligns perfectly with this year’s theme: ‘It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequality.’ We planted a food garden that will not only provide sustenance to the community but also teach people that they can make a difference. We were also able to create a sustainable smart agricultural garden based on conservation agriculture, which mitigates against climate change by using cover crops, crop rotation, and minimum soil tillage. These are some of the strategies, which we advise to our farming communities as agricultural advisors to be assured communities are resilient and food secured.”

Vulumzi SSS Principal, Mr. Mzimkhulu Fina, expressed his gratitude: “On behalf of the school, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the stakeholders involved in implementing these environmental initiatives at our school. Your dedication to environmental stewardship and community development is truly inspiring, and we are grateful for the positive impact it will have on our learners and the surrounding community.”

Mandela Day 2024 underscores the significance of partnership in building a more equitable and sustainable future, where environmental stewardship and community development converge.

“As we reflect on the legacy of Nelson Mandela, we are inspired to continue striving for a world that is more just, peaceful, and prosperous for all. Through our continued collective actions, we can create a brighter future, where the principles of sustainability, social responsibility, and community empowerment are upheld,” concluded Ms. Chauke.

Business clusters remove tons of garbage during Mandela Day

19 July 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

Over 400 people joined hands with the Nelson Mandela Bay Chamber’s geographic clusters in North End and Perseverance where eight skips and five bakkie loads of garbage were collected in the respective areas as part of Nelson Mandela International Day activities.

A total of 18 businesses brought their staff members who were later joined by members of the public, who
volunteered with collecting garbage where a variety of items was removed. This included car tyres and bumpers, shopping plastics and trollies, paper and other items that were found in the targeted areas.

At North End, more than 200 staff members from businesses around the area participated in cleaning up the North End Lake where two skips and five bakkie loads of garbage were collected. “The lake serves as an important aesthetic site for the North End area, as well as a recreational asset for the Bay for fishing and sporting activities,” says Denise van Huyssteen, Chamber Chief Executive.

“During the clean-up, the teams also removed car tyres and other heavy items which were plunged into the water, confirming the extent of illegal dumping in the area. Illegal dumping remains a huge challenge across the metro, as garbage is regularly dumped in open spaces, some of which is close to residential and business areas.”

“It was fantastic to see the way the business community has collaborated among each other in support of Mandela Day. This highlights the growing levels of volunteerism among business people across the Bay, who are committed to resurging the Bay so that its true potential can be unlocked. Positive change starts with each one of us taking action.”

The businesses in North End and Perseverance donated a variety of items in support of the clean-up such as protective gear, garbage bags, light snacks and drinks for the teams.

Strong governance needed to recover from recession

19 July 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

The Eastern Cape economy is in recession after contracting for the third consecutive quarter, with unemployment hovering at 42%. This is a concerning trend, given the province’s enormous potential.

General manufacturing is a significant part of the provincial economy, primarily driven by the automotive sector, the largest manufacturing sector in the Eastern Cape. The province hosts four of the seven Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) operating in South Africa and up to 100 major component manufacturers. Nelson Mandela Bay alone accounts for 45% of local vehicle production and provides 51% of South Africa’s vehicle exports, with over 100 000 vehicles shipped annually through the Port of Port Elizabeth.

The Eastern Cape is also the country’s second-largest citrus-producing province after Limpopo, contributing 25% of the province’s GDP with 24 508 hectares under production. The Eastern Cape is the fifth-largest exporter of lemons in the world and produces soft citrus fruits such as mandarins, oranges, and grapefruit. Additionally, the province hosts the largest percentage of the country’s livestock, producing 30% of the country’s milk, 36% of its wool, and 75% of its mohair, with 70% of the mohair exported to Italy and China.

While the province boasts a wealth of skills, products, and opportunities, there is a significant misalignment between opportunity and productivity. The three main contributors to the negative growth—mining, construction, and manufacturing—raise the big question: why?

The new MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism faces a challenging task. An economy cannot develop if the rail and road infrastructure is not maintained and if our ports are not operating at world class efficiency levels. Corruption in tender and procurement processes must be investigated and eliminated.

Road maintenance, fixing traffic lights, prosecuting cable thieves, and replacing streetlights are crucial for safety and functionality. In addition, poor road markings and dilapidated overhead signage pose significant safety risks and hinder tourism prospects. This highlights the need for provincial government and local municipalities to collaborate effectively to promote growth.

To combat unemployment, the provincial government should expedite infrastructure projects, such as building roads and railways. Fortunately, the N2 Wild Coast Road construction project, which has faced numerous delays, is now progressing. However, for substantial growth to occur, the Eastern Cape government needs to revamp itself and foster an environment conducive to investment and tourism. Without these changes, growth will remain sluggish despite the available opportunities.

The Exporters Eastern Cape, which represents most major sectors in the province, continues to work closely with all structures facilitating collaboration and investment and promoting exports. We commend the two business chambers for facilitating business in the province. The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber is aggressively working to create an enabling environment for business in Nelson Mandela Bay. These efforts are essential, but government cooperation is crucial to retain and grow future investments.

Going Green for Mandela Month

16 July 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

As South Africa commemorates Nelson Mandela Month 2024, the Coega Development Corporation (Coega) is turning its focus inward. Inspired by the theme: It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequality, Coega is implementing sustainable interventions designed to strengthen the environmental management of its Special Economic Zone (SEZ), to promote the spirit of good citizenship and make a lasting impact in local communities.

Driven by its Corporate Social Investment (CSI) Programme, Coega has partnered with Columba Leadership, the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality (NMBM), the national Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE) and the Eastern Cape Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR), to establish a food garden and sustainable waste management initiative at Vulumzi Senior Secondary School in Motherwell, Gqeberha.

The initiative calls on employees and stakeholders to volunteer their time and efforts on 18 July, aligning with Coega’s CSI objectives to drive social change and shared value, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2 (Zero Hunger), 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing), and 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). Coega is also revisiting its Mandela Month 2023 Garden Project at the Door of Hope Children’s Home to initiate a sustainability mentorship programme for the upkeep of its climate-resilient garden.

Ms. Telly Chauke, Coega’s Chief Sustainability Officer explains that this year’s initiative prioritises awareness and volunteerism in critical areas of food security, waste beneficiation, and environmental education.

“At the core of sustainability, is a commitment to a healthy planet and a just society. Volunteerism is the heart of that commitment. When volunteers lend their time and skills to environmental projects, community or school gardens, and educational initiatives, they become the driving force behind positive change. In Coega’s sustainability efforts, volunteers amplify our impact and inspire others to join the movement for a sustainable future,” says Chauke.

Coega’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond Mandela Month. By initiating these projects, Coega aims to create a lasting impact that fosters long-term partnerships for environmental and social wellbeing amongst employees and community members.

Coega’s Executive Manager for Corporate Services, Ms. Mokgaetsi Sebothoma, explains that employee volunteerism is an important element in Coega’s 2024 Mandela Month approach.

“In the spirit of Nelson Mandela, even the smallest act of volunteerism from our employees can create a ripple effect of positive change. By coming together on Mandela Day, we can amplify our impact and build a more equitable society while creating an opportunity for our employees to contribute in a meaningful way beyond being employed to earn a living, just as Madiba himself envisioned. Acts like these give us and our employees a sense of purpose in our work,” says Sebothoma.

Aligned with its commitment to shared value and its vision as a leading catalyst for socioeconomic development, Coega actively partners with like-minded organisations. This collaborative approach facilitates the sharing of knowledge and resources, ultimately empowering communities to achieve sustainable growth.

Ms. Asanda Njobe, Provincial Manager at the Columba Leadership development organisation and Coega’s sustainability partner, urges young leaders to embrace servant leadership in their schools and communities.

“Our value of service emphasises the importance of selflessly sharing resources and utilising our strengths and expertise to drive meaningful action and contribute to the greater good. Our collaboration with Coega and other organisations will enable us to create a sustainable and supportive environment for the schools and young people we serve,” says Njobe.

Recognising the vital link between environmental sustainability and economic development, Coega is harnessing the spirit of Mandela Month 2024 with impactful sustainable initiatives. These initiatives not only honour Mandela’s legacy of social justice and environmental stewardship, but also pave the way for a thriving future in the surrounding community.

“By fostering local partnerships and promoting volunteerism, Coega aims to create a lasting positive impact that extends far beyond the month of July. This dedication to longterm sustainability ensures a healthier environment, a more empowered and engaged workforce, and a brighter future for generations to come,” concludes Chauke.

Regarding its Non-SEZ Infrastructure Programme, Coega has successfully implemented mega infrastructure projects throughout the country, deepening state capacity for service delivery and enabling inclusive growth and socio-economic development, as a trusted infrastructure Implementing Agent of Choice. This is also aligned with the objectives of the South African Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan (ERRP), particularly to build a sustainable, resilient, and inclusive economy. “Coega takes immense pride in its work as a leading SEZ and a trusted infrastructure Implementing Agent of Choice in South Africa, enriching the lives of communities. For 25 years, Coega projects stand as a testament to our commitment to advancing the improvement of infrastructure and cultivating environments conducive to investment and socio-economic development,” concludes Dr. Vilakazi.

New Stellantis factory to create 1 000 new jobs

11 July 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

Stellantis South Africa hosted 44 members of the SOS Children’s Villages at the corporate headquarters in Midrand today to introduce them to possible careers in the automotive industry.

Accompanied by 14 staff members from the homes, many of them former residents themselves, the children were able to see Stellantis’s full range of seven brands that are sold and supported in South Africa as well as hear testimonies from three different members of staff who shared their own journeys in the automotive industry – and how they had broken glass ceilings.

“The automotive industry is a global one and provides a range of sustainable careers from automotive engineering to design, sales, human resources, finance and even public relations,” said Stellantis SA Head of Corporate Communications Deidre du Plessis.

“South Africa is a wonderful case in point: the automotive industry contributed to 4,9% to the country’s GDP in 2022, exported vehicles to 152 different destinations and earned R227,3-billion in foreign exchange.”

This was one of the reasons why Stellantis had chosen to invest in the construction of a R3-billion manufacturing facility in the Eastern Cape, to build vehicles for Africa, create jobs and invest in the local community as part of its circular economy philosophy, she said.

“Investing where we operate means making a significant and positive impact in the communities in which we operate and the best way to do this is to provide jobs and create hope. Hosting these wonderful children here today to show them what exists and give them something to aspire to, is a wonderful privilege and we look forward to helping them where we can on their journeys in life.”

The SOS Children’s Villages are a network of havens for abandoned and vulnerable children across South Africa building families for children in need, helping them shape their future and develop their communities.

“The automotive sector is wonderful because it allows people to enter at different educational and skills levels across a very wide range of activities as well as playing a critical role in moving the economy and contributing to it, many people take it for granted however. Today, we had an opportunity to lift the curtain and give the next generation an idea of how they can play an even bigger role in it and change their lives for the better,” said Du Plessis.

Stellantis South Africa is a wholly owned subsidiary of Stellantis NV, the world’s third largest automotive company formed from the merger of FCA and PSA in 2021. Stellantis SA has an integral role in the company’s Dare Forward 2030 strategy to produce a million units a year, with 70% localisation and achieve 22% market share in Middle East and Africa by 2030.

Chamber’s Trade and Investment Desk to market Bay of Opportunity as investment destination of choice

10 July 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber’s newly-launched Trade and Investment Desk is set to position the metro on the national and global stage as a diversified manufacturing investment destination and exports hub for Africa.

The Desk, in partnership with global auditing, advisory & tax leaders BDO South Africa, global financial services leader Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) and the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC), is a key driver in the Business Chamber’s strategy to unlock the economic potential of Nelson Mandela Bay to attract and foreign direct investment and enable job creation.

Chamber Chief Executive Denise van Huyssteen said that the positioning of the metro as the Bay of Opportunity aimed to harness its unique advantages as a two-port city with a strong manufacturing base building on its existing strength as South Africa’s automotive hub, with highly-skilled people and an attractive lifestyle proposition.

“The Trade and Investment Desk is a strategic driver in bringing this vision to life, working as a united business community along with our partners and key role-players in the trade and investment space to market the Bay as an investment destination of choice and secure catalytic projects that will drive growth. “The launch of the Desk is a major step forward in resurging the Bay and setting up the local economy for growth and diversification amid massive global advances in technology, new energy and the need for climate resilience. In parallel, as the Chamber is working to improve the enabling environment for business, it is critical that we are proactive in building investor confidence in the advantages of the Bay, and providing support to retain and attract investors,” Van Huyssteen said.

The work of the Trade and Investment Desk will include the marketing of Nelson Mandela Bay as an investment destination; securing partnerships and linkages with key trade and investment role-players to ensure collaborative efforts and consistent messaging; supporting investors with economic data, local information and networking; and facilitating trade and export opportunities for local businesses.

The Desk will support the Chamber’s forward-looking Local Economy Reinvention Think Tank, which is working to generate viable new business opportunities to build on the metro’s strengths and future-proof the local economy.

Van Huyssteen emphasised that the Desk would work in tandem with local, provincial and national government role-players in trade and investment promotion and investor support, seeking “collaboration that enhances a coordinated effort rather than duplication, and provide streamlined engagement for investors”.

Speaking at the launch today [Weds, 10 July 2024] at the Sun Boardwalk Convention Centre, BDO SA CEO Bonga Mokoena said the firm was encouraged by the Business Chamber’s progressive approach and innovative thinking to fostering collaboration for the greater good of the local economy.

“I believe that as partners, we are aligned in our vision of unlocking economic growth. The Chamber’s Trade and Investment Desk, founded on global investment promotion best practice, will be an important lever in our collective vision and create much needed opportunities for the people, businesses and communities of Nelson Mandela Bay and South Africa at large,” said Mokoena.

ECDC chief executive Ayanda Wakaba said the launch of the Desk extended and deepened the long-standing collaborative relationship between the agency and the Chamber on enterprise and exporter development.

“As the provincial agency tasked with promoting the Eastern Cape as an investment facilitating export and trade in order to advance economic growth, we are excited to collaborate with the Chamber on the new Trade Desk and efforts to promote trade and investment. Collaboration involving the metro, the province and the Chamber stands to produce better results for the Eastern Cape Province and Nelson Mandela Bay.

“Nelson Mandela Bay is the largest commercial centre in the Eastern Cape, an anchor for large-scale trade, investment and tourism, and the automotive manufacturers in the Bay are the largest contributor to provincial manufacturing output and trade. It stands to reason that the metro and the Chamber are key partners for the province in economic development,” he said.

Wakaba said ECDC envisaged a close working relationship with the Chamber and would be designating officials to participate in the Trade Desk activities. He said the ECDC was in discussion with the Chamber to locate at an official at the Chamber offices in order to further strengthen integrated efforts. RMB Corporate and Investment Banking Sector Head Pieter Nienaber said the bank supported the Chamber’s vision and its efforts to support business in Nelson Mandela Bay.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Chamber to support the Trade and Investment Desk, an initiative that aligns with our focus on innovation and solutions to add value for business and contribute to economic growth in our country,” Nienaber said.

Business Chamber president Siyolo Dick hailed the founding partners in the Trade and Investment Desk for their shared vision and confidence in the Bay of Opportunity.

“Such collaboration is the only way to transform and resurge Nelson Mandela Bay, and promoting the metro as an investment destination is key to reducing unemployment and transforming the lives of people,” he said.

Seen at the official launch of the Chamber’s Trade and Investment Desk are Siyolo Dick (Chamber President), Pieter Nienaber (Sector Head of RMB’s Automotive, Logistics and Industrials Banking Division) Denise van Huyssteen (Chamber CEO), Ayanda Wakaba (ECDC CEO) and Bonga Mokoena (BDO CEO).
