Brace yourselves for Stage 2

14 April 2015 By Alan Straton

Eskom said this morning that it will implement stage 2 load shedding from 06:00, and this is likely to continue until 22:00 this evening.

This follows two days of load shedding, with several consumers saying that they experienced longer power outages than the normal scheduled two hours and others not experiencing load shedding at all.

This morning Eskom said the electricity supply system remains very vulnerable due to a shortage of generation capacity as several units are currently out of service due to planned and unplanned outages.

Eskom said it would like to assure customers that load shedding is implemented as a necessary measure to protect the power system.

“Any additional changes on the already vulnerable and constrained power system could lead to a change in the stage of load shedding at short notice. We will communicate if there is a need to change stages.”

The capacity available to meet today’s evening peak demand is 30 211 MW while demand is forecasted at 31 445 MW.

Load shedding is likely to continue for the rest of the week as demand is predicted to exceed supply every day until Sunday:

  • Wednesday’s evening peak capacity is forecast to be 30 211 MW while demand is forecasted at 31 596 MW.
  • Thursday’s evening peak capacity is forecast to be 30 111 MW while demand is forecasted at 31 670 MW.
  • Friday’s evening peak capacity is forecast to be 29 361 MW while demand is forecasted at 30 724 MW.
  • Saturday’s evening peak capacity is forecast to be 29 509 MW while demand is forecasted at 29 632 MW.
  • Sunday’s evening peak capacity is forecast to be 29 509 MW while demand is forecasted at 30 671 MW.
