Bloody Fish Farm

DAFF needs to rethink the Fish Farm and look at the BIGGER PICTURE

Despite my jaundiced view on the proposed fish farm for Algoa Bay I need to realistically balance economic growth prospects with conservation and environmental imperatives.

The economic growth prospects from the fish farm remain an unkown and unproven quantity. That alone meaured against the potential loss of tourism revenue and destruction of our bay should ring alarm bells in the minds of government who seem hell bent on pushing this fish farm through.

We are lacking a signature project for tourism and growth in Nelson Mandela Bay and should rather be considering extending the Marine Protected Area to include the entire Bay with narrow corridors for the existing shipping traffic and clear guidelines around recreational use that will promote commercial tourism in our Bay.  As a tourist would you rather visit a seaside city known for industry and fish farms or one known for caring for the environment and offering magnificent marine life that benefits from a caring society?

After all one doesn’t put a factory in a kiddies park or in the middle of suburbia so then why put a fish farm in the middle of an area where humans and animals eat, sleep and play?
