Bloemendal Home Burgled

2 June 2011 By Alan Straton

From the ADT Security Crime Newsletter we have picked out a couple of interesting crime incidents:

A property in Uruguay Street was burgled on Monday, 23 May 2011 when thieves entered the home by breaking down the kitchen door.  Clothing, kitchen equipment and foodstuffs were stolen.

Always make sure that your doors are protected with a door magnet, as well as a strong security gate. Thieves make use of the opportunity awarded to them by the time delay on the door’s magnet to enter your home without an alarm going off during the entry phase of the crime. Ensure that your alarm entry delay is set to the minimum time possible that allows you to enter your PIN code and de-activate the alarm.

Copper thieves strike Miramar

On Tuesday, 24 May 2011 suspects gained entry to the back yard of a store in Biggar Street by lifting the front gate off its track.  They stole copper pipes and removed taps from the property.

The sale of stolen metals is a big business that costs businesses and rate payers millions of Rands each year. Everyone, whether they are employees, business owners or just ordinary residents can play a role to help bring these offenders to book by reporting scrap metal dealers who accept stolen metals for cash.

Errant motorist fails to pay for petrol at service station

On Friday, 27 May 2011 an unknown man refilled his vehicle with petrol to the value of R500.00 at a service station in Durban Road, Korsten and drove off without paying.

Failing to pay a petrol bill is theft and a prosecutable offence. Service station operators and staff are encouraged to have a pen ready to take down the number plate details and not to return keys before payment for petrol has been received.  Surveillance cameras will also ensure that perpetrators can be caught on tape.

Burglary nearly puts auto-repair shop out of business

An auto-repair shop in Baird Street suffered a huge loss on Monday, 24 May 2011 when thieves gained entry to the store by forcing the front door open.  Equipment and car parts to the value of R50 920.00 were stolen.

Business owners are reminded to ensure that the front entrance to the business is well lit after dark and that store rooms containing valuable stock and equipment are properly secured by gates in the absence of a strong room or safe.

ADT Officer recovers stolen bag in Humewood

On Saturday, 21 May 2011 a Humewood resident was on her way home after dinner at a friend’s house when three men approached and attacked her and two friends, demanding that they hand over their handbags.

The host ran inside the house and pressed the panic button while her two friends fought off the attackers. One woman was stabbed three times before the perpetrators took off and was later transported to hospital.

ADT Armed Response Officer (ARO) Johnson arrived on the scene to assist but could not locate the suspects in the immediate area. He waited with the owner and her family to ensure that the attackers did not return before patrolling the area for a second time.

On his second patrol he found one handbag not far from the client’s home. The resident has expressed her thanks to ARO Johnson for his efficiency and swift reaction.

Residents are warned to use extreme caution when accosted by strangers demanding money or possessions.

Staying safe when home alone – Safety in the home tips for young children:

  • Always leave a phone number where you can be reached along with numbers for neighbours and emergency services right by the phone.
  • Have your children check in with you when they arrive home.
  • Set rules for having friends over when you’re not there and for your children going to friends’ homes when no adults are present.
  • Let your children practice operating door and window locks.
  • Explain how important it is not to let anyone into the house without your permission.
  • Teach them to not reveal on the phone or at the door that no adults are home, but to instead say their parents are too busy to come to the phone or door.
  • Rehearse the home fire escape plan with your children.
