Bayworld Redevelopment Slated for 2020

1 March 2019 By Alan Straton

The Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) mandated by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) and the Eastern Cape Provincial Government (ECPG) Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture recently announced the beginning of a new and exciting phase towards the redevelopment of Bayworld and the greater Happy Valley precinct which includes the old Boet Erasmus stadium.

This important step comes after the Bayworld Project Steering Committee (BPSC), a body established throught a Cooperative Governance Agreement between the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and Provincial Goverment met to deliberate on the progress made by the MBDA thus far. The BPSC comprising of representatives from the MBDA, NMBM and ECPG also includes several other stakeholders in Civil Society, Business and Academia.

At the same meeting, the Bayworld SC finalized an information item to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture Committee advising them of the significant progress made to date by the MBDA. Earlier, the BPSC had received a comprehensive presentation on the new Bayworld precinct’s conceptual framework plan that is now being taken through an intensive stakeholder engagement process.

The Bayworld stakeholder engagement process seeks to solicit views and aspirations from various stakeholders, testing the feasibility and sentiment towards the draft conceptual framework. The public and stakeholders also get the opportunity to reimagine the Bayworld precinct and propose their own aspirational views and opinions.

The stakeholder engagement process is scheduled for completion by the 30th of March 2019.
Members of the public that wish to engage should email vanessa@strategicedge.co.za to get included in the process. A limited number of spaces are available, hence booking is essential. Public meetings will be held at the MBDA Tramways Building on the 5th & 6th of March from 10am.

Citizens of the Bay are invited to join the process in sharing their dreams and aspirations in reshaping these iconic assets of Nelson Mandela Bay. According to the plan, site works for the improvement of Bayworld are scheduled to start in the second half of 2020.
