Bay Stars keep 100% home record

19 March 2012 By Alan Straton

Nelson Mandela Bay’s future hope of Premier Soccer League (PSL) participation, Bay Stars, maintained its excellent 100% winning margin at home when they bashed Mthatha Liverpool with 3 – 1 at Gelvandale Stadium and set the scene for an epic battle for the top of the log with FC Tornado on Friday.

Bay Stars Team Manager Nichulas Manyataza confirmed that the current log leader, FC Tornado, suffered a 4 – 1 defeat against Mthatha Bucks which means that Bay Stars are only two points adrift.

Coach Graham Harrison said he is very proud of his charges since they managed to come back after being a goal down after Mthatha Liverpool drew first blood in the 40th minute. Stars’ striker John Giannakis, who took over the captaincy from the injured Niven Kops, gave the home crowd lots to cheer about when he equalized in the 46th minute.

“That goal came just at the right time as it lifted the spirit in the team when they walked off to the change rooms and it seems that it had exactly the opposite effect on our opponents.

“This is also the first time the boys fought back so gallantly after being a goal down,” Harrison added.

An own goal by Mthatha Liverpool, that can be described as a forced error, early in the second half gave Bay Stars another boost. Stars’ Leroy van /Rensburg delivered the final nail in the coffin for Mthatha Liverpool when he scored a cracker of a goal in the 31st minute to seal another win for the Nelson Mandela Bay favourites.

Harrison said he is concerned that the team created several more opportunities but could not convert it into goals.

“We will definitely work on this as we are determined to bring back the three points when we take on FC Tornado on Friday,” he added.

Lets hope the refereeing is kosher when Bay Stars meet FC Tornado away from home.
