Average Dam Levels at 49.6% Today 9 June

9 June 2011 By Alan Straton

More good news for Port Elizabeth residents as we will the dam levels to exceed the magical figure of 60% total capacity. At that level the lifting of water restrictions will be ‘considered’.

The capacities of the major storage dams  supplying  Nelson Mandela Bay, as measured this morning 9 June – Capacity (Rainfall in millimetres):

  • Kouga: 58.1% (35 mm)
  • Churchill: 44% (44 mm)
  • Impofu: 32.5% (46 mm)
  • Loerie: 100% (49 mm)
  • Groendal: 100% (118 mm)
  • Average all: 49,6%  of total combined capacity.

Interesting to note that the Loerie Dam with 49 millimetres of rain is now at 100% capacity from 77.2% yesterday. I am a little bit confused with the Kouga, Churchill and Impofu Dam figures as they are reported to be showing the same available capacity as yesterday at 57.2%, 40.3% and 26% respectively. I have asked for a check on them but will probably get the same knee jerk response – which is to ignore me AGAIN. FIXED.

The Groendal Dam sluice gates will probably be opened later on today – if you have boats in boat sheds in Redhouse it would be prudent to go and fetch them now as that water will come racing down the Swartkops River.
