The Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) board met today for a special board meeting to discuss and resolve on a number of critical matters. Also in attendance at this special board meeting was Andrew Whitfield, member of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s (NMBM) Mayoral Committee and head of Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture (EDTA) and Anele Qaba the EDTA Executive Director. Both Whitfield and Qaba attend MBDA board meetings in their capacity as representatives of the parent municipality, NMBM.
Chief Executive Officer
The board accepted and ratified the resignation and amicable parting of ways with current CEO Pierre Voges. Voges’s services to the MBDA will terminate end January 2017.
The Chairperson of the MBDA board Mr Phil Goduka thanked the outgoing CEO for his valuable services and said “under Pierre’s leadership and management the MBDA emerged as a beacon of hope for Nelson Mandela Bay with key strategic urban renewal projects being introduced in Nelson Mandela Bay, amongst them being the upgrade of Govan Mbeki Avenue, the redevelopment of the Donkin Reserve, the Singaphi Street upgrade, German funded Helenvale renewal project, Veeplaas business centre and many more key strategic projects in the pipeline.”
Speaking about his term at the helm of the MBDA for twelve years, Pierre Voges had this to say “I have been around for twelve years and for most of that time, especially at the beginning no one gave the MBDA a chance to change things. People were sceptical. You look back now and you’ll see we have not done badly. The visible public and tourism infrastructure is there for all to see. The work the MBDA is doing in townships is ground breaking and charting a new way forward. The agency has a good board in place as well as a new committed local government in place. Both the board and City leadership are keen to make the city competitive”.
Interim structural arrangements
The board further resolved to appoint its current Chief Financial Officer Ashwin Daya, as the Acting Chief Executive Officer effective from February until such time that a new CEO has been recruited. Goduka stated that Daya has been with the MBDA virtually since its inception and was regarded as the driving force behind the Agency obtaining four successive clean audits from the Auditor-General and has a very good understanding of the business and its operations to guide it through this interim period. The board also resolved that the recruitment process of a new CEO should commence immediately.
