Thanks to an invite from the Animal Welfare Society Club 100, I was fortunate enough to be granted the opportunity to showcase a great passion of mine and make my first public appearance as Mister Impossible ~ escape artist at their regular monthly meeting last month. It was an opportunity I couldn’t resist, since it gave me the chance to join the ranks of some of my favourite contemporary escape artists such as David Straitjacket, Roslyn Walker, Jonathan Goodwin, and SA’s very own Wolflock.
For those unfamiliar with the art of escapology, it’s the practice of liberating oneself from various types of physical restraints and traps like handcuffs, straitjackets, chains, ropes, water tanks, etc. and was made famous more than a century ago by the late great Harry Houdini.
An escape artist, otherwise known as an escapologist, performs daring escapes much like a stuntman does and requires a certain measure of physical skill to do so without sustaining any serious injuries along the way.
WARNING: Performing escapology stunts can be extremely dangerous and should never be attempted by amateurs.
My afternoon with the club was spent regaling members with a number of different escapes; from having my wrists bound tightly with a lock and chain to escaping a pair of thumbcuffs as well as challenging two audience members to tie me securely using 30 metres of rope and escaping in less time than it took them to restrain me. The club members even had the chance to try an escape themselves (the great rubber band escape) and find out if they too have a knack for escapology.
All in all, it was an afternoon well spent bringing some unique entertainment to a worthy charity group and I would certainly be glad to perform for them again in the future in support of the brilliant work they do for the Animal Welfare Society in PE.
The AWS Club 100 gets together the second Wednesday of every month from 2pm – 4pm at the Laubscher Park East Community Hall in Villiers Road, Walmer. The cost to attend a meeting is R10 per person and proceeds raised by the club are donated to the Animal Welfare Society to help with the care and treatment of stray and unwanted animals. Members are treated to a fun afternoon with tea and coffee and an interesting array of guest speakers, bingo every second month and a chance to meet new friends. All are welcome. For more information, please feel free to contact Bridget Hamlet on 041 484 5648 or 072 942 2097.
As for the future of Mister Impossible ~ escape artist… plenty more escapes are yet to come and I can’t wait to wow audiences once again with some more feats of escapology in the near future.
