Conceding defeat after 98.43% of votes were counted the ANC’s Jackson Mthembu said; “We did not lose to a better party. We lost it because of our own doing”
The Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole’s 609 217 registered voters presently stand at a voter turnout of 63.57% with 6 893 spoilt votes from the 379 697 cast and counted.
The official announcement will be made by the IEC once the remaining five Ward results are announced.
With over 989% of the votes counted and the DA on 46.65% eyes will turn to coalition politics.
In July 2016 EFF leader Julius Malema vehemently rejected the possibility of his party entering into a coalition in any municipality after the August 3 elections.
“We don’t have a manifesto of coalitions. We have a manifesto of governing. We will deal with those issues after the elections. But the mandate of our party has been that we must not go to coalition with the ANC‚” Malema is quoted as saying.
“We are strong in Port Elizabeth. We are going to take Port Elizabeth‚ Tshwane‚ Joburg and Ekurhuleni. We are going to shock a lot of people in eThekwini Municipality‚ in another so-called ANC stronghold‚” Malema said.
Faced with being the Kingmaker in Nelson Mandela Bay with over 5% of the vote one wonders if the realities of opposition politics will change young Julius’ mind?
