An Open Letter to The Herald

16 July 2013 By Alan Straton

Dear Heather, Editors, Sub Editors, Journalists and Staff

I noticed two things about your publication this past Monday that made me swell with pride in MyPE, The Herald and our city:

  1. Your appointments section celebrating the business achievements of local residents. I am sure that between you and MyPE’s Movers and Shakers section we will continue to portray our city in a postitive light.
  2. Gillian McAinsh joining MyPE in highlighting the scourge of people who abuse disabled parking spots. Welcome to the fight, Gillian, you will find it frustrating and rewarding as well as scary at times as people abuse and intimidate you when they realise that they are in the wrong. Have fun reading some of the articles in the MyPE Traffic Hooligan section.

It was a pity that you did not attend the Volkswagen Media do last night, Heather, as I would have liked to personally congratulate you on the two fine efforts above.

In a world that is predicting the imminent demise of print media (and the owners actually believing it) I would like to state that without newspapers the world will be a sorry and poorer place. As I was saying to Bobby Cheetham and Bob Kernohan last night; “I don’t see anyone outside of the printed media rushing to do the hard journalistic work that contributes to society whilst not positively affecting the bottom line.”

Who else is reporting independently on our councillors and municipality? Who else has the resources to do investigative and in-depth reporting?

All I can do is help you to help our city by promoting you and occasionally keeping you on the straight and narrow.

Good Luck!
