Alan Straton – A Ward 7 LOCAL Through And Through

19 October 2021 By Alan Straton

As I add and approve businesses submissions in the Ward 7 Directory it has struck me that my ties to Ward 7 stretch deep and long.

For example:

  • I was born and raised for my first 4 years in Middleton Avenue, Adcockvale
  • I attended Newton Park Pre-Primary
  • I worshipped at the Mater Dei Catholic Church
  • I went to Grey Junior and High Schools (which used to be part of Ward 7)
  • My sisters, Bronwyn and Nicola attended Alexander Road High School
  • My brother, Michael attended Technical High School
  • My son, Philip, attended Linkside Pre-Primary
  • My son went to both Grey Schools
  • My daughter, Brittany attended Collegiate Junior and Collegiate Girls’ High Schools
  • My ex in-laws, Neil and Joan stayed in Greenacres Village
  • I stayed in Gerald Street, Newton Park
  • I now stay in Parsons Hill
  • I am involved in the Parsons Hill/Greenacres Neighbourhood Watch
  • I have offices in 13 Mangold Street, Newton Park
  • I sail on the North End Lake out of the EP Powerboat Club
  • I have been resident in Ward 7 since 1993
  • I cast my very first vote for a National Elections in Ward 7 – at the Technical High School
  • I have voted in every election since then in Ward 7
  • I heavily support businesses in Ward 7 – Doctor, Grocer, Hardware, Restaurants, Coffee Shops, the list goes on.

After 28 years in Ward 7 I THINK that I know what is needed to make our Ward hum with excitement!

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
