A Nearly Definitive List of Apologisers and Apologisees

Human beings are for the most part a strange lot – put us together in a group and we will find common ground. Once we have found that common ground then we will stake out our teritory and find things that differentiate us from other groups. Then we will spend most of our time justifying why our group is special and even more time pointing out what is wrong with other groups.

This kind of behaviour leads to different groups at different times in history demanding an apology from another group.

Just to remind you – an apology is an expression of regret or remorse for actions, while apologizing is the act of expressing regret or remorse. The goal of apologizing is generally forgiveness, reconciliation and restoration of the relationship between the people involved in a dispute.

The basic elements of an apology communicate:

  1. that the person apologizing was, in some way, responsible for the harmful actions taken;
  2. that the person apologizing is aware of harms that resulted from those actions; and
  3. that the person apologizing intends to behave differently in the future.
