80% of students unable to register at Lovedale College

13 February 2019 By Alan Straton

Dear MyPE

The future of all students at Lovedale College is hanging in the balance whilst the institution is in the middle of a workers shutdown.

On Monday, 11 February 2019, the Democratic Alliance did oversight inspections the Lovedale College campuses situated in King William’s Town, Zwelitsha and Alice.

Staff affiliated to National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU), South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) and National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa (NAPTOSA) have been on strike since October 2018.

The main issues seem to be the permanency of staff, the organogram and the alleged employment of unqualified people.

Currently, 80% of students are not registered and therefore they can’t access the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funding.

These students can’t apply for NSFAS because they are not registered. This is a crisis as NSFAS applications close on 15 February 2019.

Students also cannot be accepted into residences as they are not registered. Many have travelled from far and wide to register, but now have nowhere to sleep because of this unacceptable situation.

We will escalate the plight of these students to Yusuf Cassim MP, DA Team One South Africa Spokesperson for Students, to take up with the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Naledi Pandor, and insist that she intervenes for the sake of the youth in South Africa.

Furthermore, the Democratic Alliance Student Organisation (DASO) will also request a meeting with the administration and staff to assist in finding a solution to this problem.

DASO will continue fighting to ensure that no student is left behind in building One South Africa For All.

Regards

Baxolile Nodada
DASO EC Constituency Chairperson
