The Volkswagen Group reported a rise in global vehicle deliveries for the first four months of this year. Europe’s largest automaker delivered 2.66 million units between January and April 2011 – an increase of 13.9 percent on last year’s figure of 2.34 million over the corresponding period. This outperformed the world market, which averaged a 7.7 percent increase.
The company also reported a rise for the month of April, when 690 900 vehicles were sold – up by 14.5 percent (2010 – 603 500). “As expected, deliveries by our Group Brands developed well in April, too,” Group Board member for Sales Christian Klingler said in Wolfsburg. “As a result, we have made a good start to the second quarter. We aim to maintain this momentum over the coming months.”
Locally, Volkswagen Group South Africa improved its first quarter sales figures from 17 007 in 2010 to 24 861 in 2011 – an increase of some 46 percent. The Volkswagen Brand notched up 17 961 sales during the first quarter of 2011, an increase of 31 percent over the corresponding period’s 13 701 units last year. The Audi Brand increased its sales figures from 2 592 units in 2010 to 4 722 this year (82 percent). The Commercial Vehicles Brand enjoyed the most significant growth – 205 percent – in the period from January to April, having sold 714 units last year compared to 2 178 this year.
“The market continues to show positive growth with Volkswagen benefiting particularly in the Polo Vivo and Polo segments due to the very attractive product offerings allowing us to benefit from the economic upturn. On the commercial front the new Amarok is beginning to really makes its presence felt which will be further enhanced later in the year when we launch the single cab,” said Communications General Manager, Matt Gennrich.
