Today we focus on South Africa through a TED talk by Zolani Mahola. TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics – from science to business to global issues. Independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.
Port Elizabeth’s local TEDx chapter is to be found here: www.TEDxPortElizabeth.org.za.
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Zolani takes us through her personal journey of growing up in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth and takes us back to a protest in 1989, the year of South Africa’s last ‘Whites Only’ election. The protest sound begins as a roar, and turns into a song. A song with an answer.
And it is with song that Zolani tells her stories, and is able to create a space of harmony. A moment of closed circle, a moment of real harmony.
Zolani Mahola is a South African singer and actor. Since 2002, she has been the lead singer of the South African music group Freshlyground.
