This coming Local General Election on 1 November 2021 will determine just where the balance of power in our highly segregated city will come to rest for the next five years.
For the first few Local General Elections the choices were Suburbs v Townships – depending on whether the DA or ANC were in the majority.
Then we saw the emergence of the Northern Areas becoming contested ground as the Big Two fought to establish ‘crossover’ support.
Along came the EFF who entered the fray in the townships with their laser focus.
And now our deeply segregated city suffers under successive governments that favour their voting base – Suburbs v Township. This reinforces a racial narrative that keeps us all under the thumb of politicians everywhere.
The Northern Areas is about to become hotly contested and polarise our landscape even further with reports of up to 12 partisan parties eager to contest for a slice of the Northern Areas pie.
AND, in all of this we have AIM – 100% Nelson Mandela Bay Focused, placing People Before Politics and promising to only favour Nelson Mandela Bay in decisions and policy, promising to not polarise and separate people and place but to only lift our City up.
“Put Nelson Mandela Bay first and vote for AIM” may be a steep ask for people wanting to cling to power in Suburbs, Townships or Northern Areas in order to benefit themselves.
Will people see the light and give our City as a whole a chance or will the same selfishness continue?
