Young and Teasdale crowned South Africa’s National Enduro Champions

The final round of the Liquorland South African National Enduro championship, the Winterberg Enduro, took place this past weekend just outside of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. Organisers had put together a challenging 47km long loop, but had to re route certain sections slightly just before the event, as the area had seen an unusual amount of winter rain and rivers were too full for bikes to cross.

Each loop consisted of a 2.5km Motocross type special test that was raced from the first lap, followed by a 3.2km Extreme test, which was also timed from the first lap and a longer 8km Enduro special test that was timed from the second lap. Competitors were given 2h 05min for the first lap, 1h 55min for the second lap, 1h 50min for the third lap and 1h 05min for a shortened fourth lap. None of the top competitors struggled making their times and therefore it was down to the special tests.

It was once again Brother Leader Tread KTM’s Wade Young who kept the competition speechless when he won every single special test on the day, securing yet another victory, with six out of six wins this season, firmly reclaiming the number one plate as South Africa’s National E2 Enduro champion.

“I enjoyed the race and a very big thanks goes out to the organisers who put a lot of effort into organizing this event. I am extremely happy to finish the season on a high note and I’m truly grateful for the support that my family and my amazing team and sponsors are giving me, allowing me to be my best every time we go out on the track. My KTM 300 EXC ran like a dream as usual and I can’t wait for the upcoming extreme events like Red Bull Braveman, Red Bull Sea to Sky and the big one at the end of the year, the Roof of Africa.”, said a happy Wade Young.

Always having Young’s back was his team mate Scott Bouverie who had a fantastic 2015 season, finishing second to Young in most races this year and rounding off the E2 podium at the Winterberg Enduro, holding on to his second place overall in the E2 class, making it a 1-2 for Brother Leader Tread KTM. Bouverie will unfortunately not be able to race the Roof of Africa event this year as he will have to undergo knee surgery in order to be ready for the 2016 season.

The National E1 Championship certainly was one of the most exciting classes to follow in 2015 with Brother Leader Tread KTM’s Travis Teasdale having dominated the season onboard his KTM 250 XC-F, winning five out of six races and confirming that he is by far the fastest E1 rider South Africa has to offer. His teammate Dwayne Kleynhans also had his best season to date, rounding off the E1 Championship podium for 2015 with a respectable third place in the championship.

Brother Leader Tread KTM’s lady rider Kirsten Landman finished the Winterberg Enduro in fourth place in the Silver class, comfortably finishing her season in third place in the Silver class as the only female rider in this class.

Local PE based favourite and Offroad specialist Juan ‘Bollie’ van Rooyen made a guest appearance in the Enduro championship and had a great race in the Seniors class, crossing the chequered flag in fourth place in the highly competitive Seniors class.

In the Masters class Enduro legend Alfie Cox (Alfie Cox Racing KTM) had a great day out, however a crash on the final special test cost the talented rider a lot of time and he finished the day in third place in the Masters class onboard his KTM 250 XC-W.

The very exciting High School class was dominated by one man this season, that being KTM Centurion’s Eduan Bester who won six out of six races. He did not just clean up the Enduro High School class, but is also leading the High School class in the National Offroad championship with two more rounds to go that will take place on 24 and 26 September in Worcester in the Western Cape.
