Yolande Farrow as Aunt Eller

18 May 2011 By Alan Straton

Oklahoma! is being staged at the Savoy Theatre from 18 May to 4 June 2011 (run extended due to demand) and one of the leads is Yolande Farrow as Aunt Eller.

Yolande is an accomplished actress and singer who has graced the PE stage in numerous productions for G&S, PEMADS, and the PE Shakespearean Festival as well as professional productions. Just for a little variety she has also worked as Stage Manager, served on the G&S Committee, done props and co-ordinated revues. Yolande has many cherished memories from her times on stage and especially enjoyed playing Yente in Fiddler on the Roof for G&S in 2005 and Donna Lucia d’Alvadorez in Charley’s Aunt at PEMADS. Why does she do it? “I love the magic of the stage and leaving the audience feeling that they have been part of something really special.”

Oklahoma!, presented by the Port Elizabeth Gilbert & Sullivan Society, tells the story of a handsome cowboy winning the heart of a headstrong farm girl in Oklahoma territory at the turn of the 20th Century and has entranced theatregoers for generations. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s award-winning score features the title song “Oklahoma!” and also includes “I’m Just a Girl Who Cain’t Say No,” “The Farmer and the Cowman”, “People Will Say We’re In Love,” and “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning.” This much loved musical premiered in 1943 and was a box office smash, running for an unprecedented 2,212 performances. There have been many revivals over the years including the acclaimed 1998 London production starring Hugh Jackman and the show has been a huge hit with audiences time after time.

The show is set for a limited run from 18 May to 4 June 2011 (run extended due to demand) at The Savoy Theatre in Port Elizabeth with tickets available for R110 at all Computicket outlets. A special discount has been created for students and pensioners who can get tickets at the door on the night of the show for a largely discounted rate of R80. Student/pensioner cards must be produced to qualify for this discount and regretfully only door bookings can be made.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
