World Choir Games participants to sing in St Mary’s Cathedral

16 July 2018 By Alan Straton

The Eastern Cape Children’s Choir is proud to present a concert by the Cantatori Male Choir from Port Elizabeth, under the direction of Ansie Kotzé, and the Iuventus Gaude Children’s Choir, from Jablonec in the Czech Republic. The concert will take place at St Mary’s Cathedral off Govan Mbeki Drive in Central on Tuesday, 17 July 2018, at 19h00.

IUVENTUS, GAUDE! [Youth, Rejoice!] was founded in 2015 at the Primary School of Art in Jablonec nad Nisou and is today being conducted by Mr. Tomáš Pospíšil. The choir consists of the preparatory choirs: „Pueri, gaudete!“ (age 6), „Liberi, gaudete!“ (age 7-8), „Boys Choir“ (age 7-12) and the „Amici, gaudete!“ (age 9-11). The main choir „IUVENTUS, GAUDE!“ consists of children aged 11 to 18 with more than 190 girls and boys in the choirs altogether.

The broad repertoire of the choir presents the works from the Baroque era as well as contemporary music, folksongs, swing, spirituals, musicals and others as Tomáš Pospíšil intends to show to the children the beauty and quality of music of different ages and different cultures. In the INTERKULTUR world ranking list „Iuventus, gaude!“ is currently listed on the 20th place in the category Children’s and Youth Choirs.

Iuventus Gaude are fresh from participating in the World Choir Games in Pretoria the past week, where they received a gold and a silver award. They are currently conducting a concert tour along the Garden Route.

The CANTATORI Male Choir was founded in 2010 under the baton of Ansie Kotzé, singing mainly in four parts and a cappella. The members, presently 13, are from different parts of Port Elizabeth, and sing both sacred and secular songs in various languages. “Cantatori” is Italian for “singers”. The choir has appeared as special guests at the annual sell-out Feathermarket Organ Society Christmas Concert and regularly performs during church services and form part of many of the larger retirement villages’ entertainment programmes.

Tickets are available at the door at R60.00 for adults and R40.00 for pensioners, students and scholars.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
