Wooden Spoonists Pull Boots on to do Battle Again

1 February 2011 By Alan Straton

The NMMU Rugby side of 2010 did not have the most successful Varsity Cup in 2010 as they finished bottom of the log.

With the resurgence of club and provincial rugby in the Eastern Cape as well as the recent trouncing of the Blue Bulls by the Southern Kings the pressure is on the ‘Men From the Varsity’ to show the rugby loving public that they have the mettle to finish in the top three of the log or at least to win one game.

NMMU have a new coach in Brent Janse van Rensburg, who has taken control of a more experienced group of players. Brent is originally from Port Elizabeth, and he has spent time at the Dawie Snyman and Murray Mexted academies.

He taught in Port Elizabeth and at Queens College, coached Border Schools for two years and was also the technical advisor for the Border senior side.

Just one win or a draw in 2011 for NMMU will be an improvement on last year’s campaign in which they failed to win a match and finished last.

NMMU Varsity Cup Rugby Fixtures:

  • Monday, February 7 – Round One – 19.00: NMMU v Tuks, Xerox NMMU Stadium, Port Elizabeth
  • Monday, February 14 – Round Two – 17.00: NMMU v UJ, Xerox NMMU Stadium, Port Elizabeth (TV)
  • Monday, February 21 – Round Three – 19.00: UCT v NMMU, UCT Rugby Fields, Cape Town
  • Monday, February 28 – Round Four – 19.00: Maties v NMMU, Craven Stadium, Stellenbosch
  • Monday, March 7 – Round Five – 19.00: NMMU v TUT, Xerox NMMU Stadium, Port Elizabeth
  • Monday, March 14 – Round Six – 17.00: NWU-Pukke v NMMU, Fanie du Toit Stadium (TV)
  • Monday, March 21 – Round Seven – 19.00: NMMU v Shimlas, Xerox NMMU Stadium, Port Elizabeth

The Semis and Finals will take place as follows:

  • Monday, March 28 – Semifinals – 16.45: Semifinal One – Log position 2 v Log position 3, venue TBC (TV) and 19.00: Semifinal Two – Log position 1 v Log position 4, venue TBC (TV)

Monday, April 11 – Final at 19.00: Final – Winner 1 v 4 v Winner 2 v 3, venue TBC (TV)
With four Port Elizabeth Monday evening home games NMMU staff and students can look forward to a Phuza Tuesday joining the Phuza Thursday movement!

Showing off their new Varsity Cup T-shirts in preparation for the season were Tasquanne Hufkie, Zuko Nasaka and Lyree Boucher.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
