Winter Warming Endurade Series

The Endurade Winter Series, in just its first season, is fulfilling the needs of local tri- and du-athletes who  are keen to stay competitive during the winter months. Given the mild winter weather in Port Elizabeth, the Series has enabled some of the triathletes to keep racing throughout the year. The Endurate Winter Series takes place on the first Sunday of the month during winter and heads back to Pollok Beach this Sunday morning with plenty of action for the whole family.

Starting at 10am with a mass start on the beach, the Series offers no fewer than 7 events for the participants to choose from: A sprint distance triathlon (750m swim, 20km Cycle, 5km run), Sprint distance Duathlon (2.5km Run, 20km Cycle, 5km Run), 750m ocean swim, mini Duathlon (1.55km Run, 10km Cycle, 2.5kim Run), kids Duathlon (1.25km Run, 5km Cycle, 1.25km Run), 5km beach fun run and a kids 1.25km beach run.

Last month Triathlon was won by German Triathlete Johannes Moldan with Travis McGrath in 2nd place and Mauritz Erasmus in 3rd whilst Antonella Saporta, Robyn Furstenburg and Kimberley Vorster dominated the ladies triathlon. In the Sprint distance Duathlon, the participants to watch out for this month will be Round 2 winners Ross Helliwell and Jade Hooke with Alex Blumberg, William Wilson, Neylese Donaldson and Lindsay Steele hungry to snatch race honours. A mix of age groups is enjoying the mini Duathlon which offers a great introduction in the sport. 15 year of Dewald Klinkerburg got the better of dad, Pieter, last month with Marcelle Meyer grabbing 3rd place and looking to build on that this month. In the girls mini Duathlon it was Micha Swans from 12 year old Jayde Swans with Lauryn Swans in 3rd place.

“Smaller participation has been received for the Kids Duathlon and the 750m Open water swim this season which has been disappointing but we appreciate that the awareness to the Series isn’t as it should be,” said Series director Mike Zoetmulder of Zsports Events NPC, the Eastern Cape’s only non-profit sports events company trying to help boast Nelson Mandela Bay as the Water Sport capital of Africa.

After Sunday there will be just one more Endurade Winter Series event (Sunday 4th Sept) before the Series makes way for Season 12 of the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series which starts on Sunday 16th October and remains Africa’s largest family beach event attracting hundreds of participants on alternate Sunday mornings to Hobie Beach.
